UNITED STATES T PATENT OFFICE.
MARIE LOUISE GUMAER, OF GU'YMARD, NEW YORK.
POWDER-PU FF. I
SPECIFICATION formingpart of LettersPatent No. 705,887, dated July 29, 1902.
Applicationfiled March 12. 1901.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MARIE LOUISE GUMAER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guymard, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined PoWderRecep-. tacle and Pad, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a powder-puff for toilet use, whose leading characteristics may be summarized as follows: I combine with a receptacle having convenient means for be ing charged with powder a discharge-surface composed of soft material for dabbing upon the skin and provided with a series of small perforations for egress of the powder, together with a plunger-plate connected with the handle, by the operation whereof the powder may be ejected in a suitable manner. a
In the drawings annexed'to this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved reservoir powder puif. Fig; 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the cap portion of the device, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of a modified form of cap portion.
In carrying out my invention I employ a sack or bag portion A, of silk or other textile material, having a base-piece B, which ispreferably of chamois-leather or other soft material, serving as a pad with which'to apply powder to the face, 8m, and G indicates a neck portion, of metal or other hard substance, suitably connected about the opening to the bag. The neck portion 0 consists of a hollow stem 0, having the upper and lower radial disks 0 0*, the space between said disks being adapted to receive and clamp the edge of the material of bag A about itsopening and to form a rigid mouth therefor. As seen in Fig. 4., the stem 0 is screw-threaded exteriorly to supportone of the disks, as c, the disk 0 being integral with the stem. The hollow stem 0 is interiorly threaded to receive a screw-stopper D, the latter also serving as a handle with which to operate the device. A disk E, of stiff material (see Fig. 4) and having a central aperture, is secured beneath the lower disk 0 within the bag or receptaole, said disk E having a diameter equal to $erial No. 50,838. (No model.)
that of the receptacle to distend the latter and give it a desired shoulder conformation.
Instead of using the separate disk E the disk 0 may be enlarged to supply its place, as seen in Fig. 1.
The base-piece B is provided with a series of perforations, as Z), (whichincidentally may be arranged in the form of a monogram or suitable device,) for the emission of powder contained by the receptacle in the operation of the device. Said base-piece B is, however,
lined interiorly with a covering G, of cheese cloth or other gauzy or open material capable of supporting toilet powder under normal conditions, but being permeable thereby un der a slight pressure.
In the operation of my said invention I charge the receptacle with toilet powder through the hollow neck portion, first removing the cap for that purpose. I then replace the cap, which becomes an operative handle to be grasped by the user, and the base B is dabbed against the face or part to be powdered. In this action the flexible wall of the device acts as a bellows, while the stiffeningdisk E or its equivalent serves as a plunger or piston to force the powder through the permeable piece of material G and the perforations of the base-pad B, by the outer surface of which latter it is suitably applied to theperson.
I donot limit myself to the exact detail structures herein shown and described, being aware that the same are susceptible to various changes within the scope and spirit of my invention, and I desire to claim, broadly, as follows:
1. In a combined powder-receptacle and powder-puff, a flexible bag having a permeable base, a neck portion comprising a hollow stem and substantially parallel plates between which the upper edge of said bag is adapted to be received and clamped, and a stopper adapted to close said stem and serve as a handle, substantially as described.
2. In a combined powder-receptacle and powder-puff, a flexible bag having a permeable base, and a neck portion comprising an exteriorly-screw-threaded stem, a plate rigidly supported thereby and a second plate substantially parallel therewith adapted in connection with said screw-threads to engage the upper edge of said bag and clamp it against said first-mentioned plate, substantially as described.
3. In a combined powder receptacle and pad, a flexible bag having a permeable base, a removable neck portion comprising an interiorly and exteriorly screw-threaded hollow stem, a plate rigidly attached thereto whereby the mouth of said bag is distended and pressure is exerted on the contents of said bag, a second plate substantially parallel therewith adapted in connection with said exterior threads to engage the edges of the
