COMBINED BRUSH AND PASTE TUBE DEVICE Filed OG'C. 17, 1933 INVENTOR- Eugene Be/hO/d Patented Aug. 7, 1934 UNITED STATES 1,969,253 COMBINED BRUSH AND PASTE-TUBE DEVI Eugene Berthold, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application October 17, 1933, Serial No. 693,913
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a combined brush and paste-tube device, and it has for its object to provide a new and useful combined system, whereby each kind of a brush may appropriately 5 be connected to, and immediately supplied with the sort of paste, cream, or fluid needed for its use.
It will thus appear that by associating a brushmember, whether it be a shaving-brush, a tooth- 19 brush, a shoe-brush, or most any other kind of a brush, with the respective kind of cream or paste adapted for its use, much time will be saved, and Waste avoided, as the user of the brush will al- Ways have the respective paste or cream ready in connection therewith, while at the same time the relative arrangement and combination of a tube with a brush normally will prevent that the paste or cream dries up, which otherwise usually happens when, what almost invariably is the 20 case, the cap to the paste tube gets lost.
However, in order to utilizo this device, or desired combination of brush and paste tube to its full extent, it would be necessary that some sort of means be employed in connection with the tube, so that the latter in association with such means, may serve as a handle While using the brush, or operating the combined device; and which means may at the same time serve to facilitate the discharge of the contents of the paste tube in connection with the brush-member.
In the present embodiment of my invention, which will be hereinafter more fully described, I have solved this problem in a satisfactory manner by providing a rigid support for the paste tube, at the same time accommodating the discharge of the contents of the latter; incidentally the said support, which has been shown in two slightly modified forms, will serve as a handle in connection with the tube during operation.
The paste or cream is led by a rubber tube from the paste tube to the bristles and suitably discharged among these.
In order to obtain the most satisfactory result in this regard, it is the purpose, preferably to use a rubber tube tapered towards one end, and which will have an upper somewhat stiff body portion suitable for manipulation and insertion through the neck portion of the holder of the bristles, and a lower somewhat softer body portion, which will more easily conform to the movements of the bristles in operation.
As the construction of my device is comparatively simple, the cost of manufacturing should be proportionately low.
With the above and other objects in view, this von the line 2 2 or" Figure l, and showing also a tube re-enforcing member, that may serve as a handle in operating the combined system.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view illustrating 70 another embodiment of my device, as it shows a combined shoe-brush and tube of polishing cream; the tube having a support attached thereto for operating purposes.
Figure 4 illustrates still another embodiment of 705 my invention, as it shows a combined tooth-brushv and tube of tooth paste, to which in like manner one of the before mentioned tube supportingy members may be attached.
Figures 5, 6, and 7 are detail views of a rubber 80 tube forming partA of my invention, and being applicable to each form of the three combinations mentioned; while Figure 8 illustrates the tube supporting member, which is shown attached to the tube in Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 10 indicates a shaving brush, comprising a neck portion 11 to which the bristles 12 are secured in the usual manner; the said neck portion has a central bore therethrough; said bore being at its upper endprovided with a threaded section 13 adapted to receive and have a tube of shaving cream 14 screwed on thereto; at the lower end of the threaded section 13 in the neck portion, the 95 latter has been formed with an enlarged portion 15 to form a seat for the neck 16 of a rubber tube 17 inserted through said bore.
In order to obtain a quick discharge of the paste or shaving cream among the bristles, the rubber tube 17, which is of a tapered shape, as shown in the drawing, has been provided with apertures 18 in its lower portion.
For the purpose of obtaining an easy and quick insertion of the said rubber tube 17 through the 105 neck portion 11, the said rubber tube is made with an upper somewhat less flexible body portion 19; the latter terminating in a neck 16 seated, as formerly described, in an enlarged portion 15 of the said neck portion 11; this rubber neck 16 110 serves both as a means to hold the rubber tube 17 in proper position relative to the neck portion 11, and also as a washer pressed against and' slightly over the end portion of the threaded mouthpiece of the paste tube, thereby acting as a means of sealing the joint between the said threaded moutlppiece of the paste tube 14 and the neck portion 11 of the brush member 10.
The lower body portion 20 of the rubber tube 17 is made of a flexible kind of rubber in order that it may easily conform to the movements of the'bristles 12, when used in operation.
While I have thus described a rubber tube 17, consisting of two sections of rubber material of a different flexibility, the said rubber tube may well be made of rubber having a uniform flexibility.
Itis naturally to be understood that the kind of rubber to be used is selected according to the use, or combination, in regard to which the tube is going to be employed; thus, when used in a tooth brush or shaving brush combination, the said rubber must conform to the hygienic or prophylactic vrequirement or standard.
In order to facilitate the discharge of the paste or shaving cream, and at the same time secure means, whereby the device may conveniently be operated and manipulated, even after the tube (which tube as a rule is made of a rather thin and easily collapsible material) has been partly, or nearly emptied, a member 21, consisting of a conically bent piece of a somewhat flexible material of any suitable kind, such as celluloid, has been embodied in, or attached to the inner walls of the said paste tube 14, as shown in Figure 2. The said attachment may be accomplished in any convenient manner, or the member 2l may in manufacturing be made integral with'the walls of the tube 14.
In Figure 3 the combination of a shoe-brush with a tube of polishing cream has been shown. While the principles controlling the inventive features embodied in this latter combination, are substantially the same, as those formerly described, with reference to a shaving-brush combination, a rather large support 22, or retaining member, for the bristles is shown herein. This arrangement will in turn necessitate that an extensive bore is made through said member 22, in order to accommodate the rubber tube 1'7 in regard to its relative placement therein and among the bristles 12.
In Figure 4 is shown the combination of a tooth-brush with a tube of tooth paste. The principles governing this latter combination are substantially like those mentioned above, and more specifically like those pertaining to the shoebrush combination, as it will be obvious that also in the tooth-brush combination a rather extensive bore is required. g
It must however be noted, as a most important feature in regard to all of these combinations and modifications that the actual handle, usually integral with, or constituting an elongation of the bristle-carrying section or member, is eliminated in this construction or combination, to the effect that it is the bristle-carrying section itself which is directly connected to the respective tube of cream or paste; this fact accounts for the provision made for an articial handle, or tube supporting member, as described and claimed in connection with this combined system.
Another form or ymodication of such handle or tube supporting member hasbeen shown separately in Figure 8, and attached to a tube in Figure 3. The said handle is made preferably of cardboard, as the latter is inexpensive and of sufficient stiffness to serve the purpose; this handle, indicated by numeral. 23, comprises a slightly rounded, orl somewhat cylindrically formed upper portion 24 formed with an oblong slot 26 therein to accommodate one end-corner of 85 a paste tube, as the said-tube, in gradually being emptied, is rolled up by means of an angular bent hook-formed member 25, shown in Figure 3, which hook-formed member is embedded in the end of the paste tube proper. Besides the said upper portion 24, the handle 23 comprises a lower section 27, which is made to form an annular or cylindrical portion, adapted to engage and secure the said handle to the paste tube, as shown in Figure 3.
It will thus be obvious that without regard to the amount of paste or cream left in the tube, the latter will still, by means of its associated support, be able to function satisfactorily as a handle in operating the combined device.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not therefore wish to limit myself to the construction and arrangement shown and described herein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a device oi the class described, a brush member, the latter comprising an aggregation of bristles and having a neck portion for seating said bristles therein, said neck portion being provided with a bore threaded at its outer end, and having an enlargement below the threaded portion, a tapered rubber tube formed with perforations therein at its lower end and having a collar at its top adapted to fit into said enlargement, a paste tube having its mouthpiece screwed into the threaded portion of the brush member, said paste tube having an angular, bent hook disposed at its outer end-portion, and a somewhat rounded substantially stiil member secured to the paste tube, said member being formed with an oblong slot therein for the manipulation of the hook in discharging the paste from the tube.
2. In a device of the class described, a brush member, the latter comprising an aggregation of bristles and having a neck portion for seating said bristles therein, said neck portion being provided with a bore threaded at its outer end, and having an enlargement below the threaded portion, a tapered rubber tube having a collar at its top adapted to fit into said enlargement, a paste tube having its mouthpiece screwed into the threaded portion of the brush member, said paste tube being formed with an angularly bent hook embedded at the end thereof, a somewhat stiff member having its upper portion partially surrounding the paste tube, and its lower portion enveloping the latter, said member being formed with an oblong slot therein to permit the turning of the hook in winding up the body of the paste tube, substantially as shown and described.
EUGENE BERTI-IOLD.
