IMPROVEMENT IN REGISTER-POINTS POR vPRINTING-1ItFSSFS.
@be .segnale aferra tu in ttm etttr @anni nu making putti the tame..
'L'.O ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, 'NICHOLAS HOPKINS, of the city, county, and tate of New York, have invented .a new4 and improved Point for Printing-Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming. part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of' myimproved apparatus, open.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line :c z, iig. l1.
Figure 3 is a top view of the same, showing a modified form of the bearers.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for the purpose of making holes in printed sheets preparatory to their being folded into book form by machinery, said point-holes being necessary-to insure perfect `register; and it consists in a hinged plate, having a metallic point attached to its movable part, kto be used in connection with a piece of furniture; in the combination yof one or moreV rubber or other elastic bearers with the movable part ofthe hinged plate-g in the combination of a spring-catch with the piece of furniture and with the end of the movable part of the hinged plate, tohold it steady while being used; and-in thecomhina-tion of a spring with the 'piece of furniture and with the movable part of the hinged plate, to throw it closed automatically when released from the spring-catch; the whole being constructed and arranged as here- ,.in-after more fully described.
A represents a portion lof a piece of furniture, which may be five-em, three-cm, or any other desired size. Bis a metallic plate, hinged at its middle point, the part b `of which is secured to the piece of furniture in such a way that when the two parts b and bz are shut up or folded together, the upper surface may be iiush with the surface of the piece of furniture. i To the middlel of the movable part b2 is attached a metallic point, C,A as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3. The point C may be removably attached to the plate B by having a screwthread cut upon its lower end screwing'into the said plate. Dare bearers, attached to the part b2 of the-hinged plate B, upon each side of the point C, to prevent the rollersfrom being injured by the said point. The bearers D should be elastic, so as to vgive to` allow the point to perforatethe sheet. This elasticity may be obtained by making them of India rubber, or luy/placing springs beneath them, or in any other convenient way. It' desired, the bearers D may be replaced by a cone-shaped bearer through a hole, through the centre of which the point C passes, as shown in red in iig. 3. E is a catch, pivoted` in a recess at the end of the plate B, so as to take hold of the free. end of the part bz and hold it steady while the point is being used. -The 'catch E is held foiward by. a spring, ]i, attached to its lower end, as shownin iig.A 2. Gr is' aspx-ing, placed in a recess beneath the movable part 61"', to throw 'it shut automatically when released from the catch E.V i
In using the device, as many pointsshould be used as holes will be required, and they are placed atsuch a distance apart in making up the form as may be required t'o correspond with the points ofthe folding machine. The form is now loclred up, securing the points firmly in place, and the movable parts b2 are opened and secured by the spring-catch E. The sheet is then printed upon one side, the points C forming the necessary holes in the sheet. .In printing the first side of the sheet the tympan-sheet remains stationary, butin printing the ,second side it moves slightly after each-impression, so that if the pointsC were left exposed they would in a 'short time cut slits in it'and destroy it. To guard against this, when the second side is being printed the part i5! is shut down upon the part bl, the point C and bearers D passing into recesses in the furniture, as shown in f igs. 1 and 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim-as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` A1. The hinged plate B, having a metallic point, C, attached to its movable part to be used in connection with a piece of furniture in making up the form, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth,
2. The combination oione or more rubber or other elastic bearers D with the' movable part b2 of the hinged plate B, substantially as herein shown and describedfor the purpose set forth.
The above specification o f my invention signed by lnejhs 2d day of April, 1867.
`NICHOLAS HOPKINS.
