To all whom it may'ooncern:
Be it known that I, MORTIMER NORDEN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Electric-Light Signs, of which the following is a specification.
Electric lamps have heretofore been arranged in monogram form and have been illuminated in groups for the purpose of indicating letters or numerals, and such devices are illustrated in design patents granted to me July 23', 1901, Nos. 34,848 and 34,849. In these inonograms of lamps the incandescent electric groups were secured to a base connected with a foundation, and when illuminated there was a tendency of the radiated light to produce confusion or halation of the rays, rendering it sometimes difficult to fully distinguish the numeral or. letter; and the object of my present invention is to overcome this difliculty.
In carrying out my invention I provide a plate with a series of openings therein agreeing with the number and position of the incandescentlamps, and I provide tube-sections secured to said plate concentric with the openings therein, said device being placed over the incandescent lamps of the monograms to confine the circle of light and compel the same to shine straight ahead.

In Figs. 1 and 3, Ct represents the support, I) the incandescent lamps, and c the bases to which the lamps are connected, and which bases are secured to the support. The plate d preferably agrees in surface dimensions with the support a, occupies a plane parallel thereto, and is spaced therefrom an appreciable distance, and is advantageously connected to the said support in any desired manner. This plate is provided with a series of openings 2, agreeing in number and position with the lamps b, the center of which openings coincides with the axial center of the lamps, and 6 represents tube-sections, preferably cylindrical in form and circular in Serial No. 102,885. to prevent side radiation of the light and the confusion 'and halation of the rays incident thereto, and to compel the said light to shine straight ahead.
The form of invention shown in Figs. 2 and 4 is substantially identical with that shown in Figs. 1 and 3, except that the structure is reversed-that is to say, the plate d is provided with openings 3, similar to the openings 2, agreeing in number and position with These are secured at one end the incandescent lamps b, and the tube-secy tions 0 are secured at one end concentric to the openings 3. .Inthis case, however, the plate (1 is placed distant from the support a of the lamps b and their bases'c, and the tube-sections e extend from the plate at toward the support a, being intermediate thereto. In this form of the invention the plate 61' occupies a plane parallel to the plane of the support a, and agrees substantiallyin outline with the support a, and is advantageously secured thereto in any desired manner. "this form of invention, as in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the tube-sections e confine the circle of light, prevent radiation and confusion or halation of the rays, and cause the light to shine straight ahead.
With the device of my invention circular light forms are in evidence in the monogram of lamps, and consequently the numeral or letter or groups of numerals or letters are more readily distinguished than heretofore.
I claim as my invention 1. In an electric-light sign, the combination with a base or support and a series-of lampsockets secured thereto, of a plateadapted to be connected to said base andhaving a series of apertures coinciding in position axially with said sockets, and tube-sections secured at one end to said plate concentric to'the openings and receiving and surrounding the electric-lamp bulbs as secured to the sockets, substantially as specified.
2. In an electric-light sign, the combination with a base or support and a series of lampsockets secured thereto, of a plate adapted to be connected to said base in a plane parallel therewith and having a series of circular apertures coinciding in position axially with said sockets and cylindrical tube-sections secured at one end to said plate concentric to the openings and receiving and surrounding the electric-lamp bulbs as secured to the sockets, substantially as specified.
3. In an electric-light sign, the combination with a base or support, a series of lamp-sock ets secured thereto and a series of electriclamp bulbs therein, of a plate adapted to be connected to said base in a plane parallel therewith and about on line with the ends of the lamp-bulbs and having therein a series of apertures coinciding in position axially with said sockets, and tube-sections secured at one end to the under surface of said plate con- 20 Signed by me this 26th day of March, 1902. 25
