UNITED STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HENRY GARRISON, OF BUCODA, WASHINGTON.
GUN-CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION fOlmig part Of Letters Patent N0. 705,396, dated. yLily 22, 1902.
Application filed December 26,1901. .Serial No. 87,584. (No model.) Y
To a/ZZ whom it my concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY GARRI- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bucoda, in the county of Thurston and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Gun-Cleaner, of Which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in gun-cleaners of that class iu-Which the Wiper or cleaning-pad may be adjusted to guns of different bores; and the object is to provide a simple means for spreading the pad, and, further, to provide a novel means for securing the pad material to the cleaner-rod; and a still further object is to form the pad of layers of wire-cloth firmly packed or pressed together, so as to withstand Wear, but to act thoroughly in cleaning the gun.
I will describe a gun-cleaner embodying my invention and vthen point out the novel teatures in the appended claims. Y
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this speciication,v
ing a pad-section, and Fig. 6 is a perspective' view of a pad-section holder.
For convenience the rod is made in sections that may be separated one from another. I have here shown three sections 1 2 3. lThese sections are tubular, and in each section is a rod-section, (indicated at t 5 6.) When the rod is put together, theinner rod-sections will abut one against another, making practically a single plunger or push rod, which is operated by a lever 7,'pivoted to the section 3 of the rod and having a finger portion engaging against the end of the inner rod or plungerrod section 6. These plunger-rod sections are prevented from falling out when the main rod is disconnected by means of a pin 8 passing through the rod-section and engaging in a notch 9, formed in the plunger-rod section.
series of spring yielding fingers 10.
Fig. 2 is aV Fig. 5;
Attached to the end of the cleaner-rod is a Each finger l0 has near its outer end an inwardly-incli-ned portion 11, against which a plungerhead l2 on the push-rod engages. Evidently by forcing the push-rod longitudinally the said head 12 Will lspread the several lingers which carry the pad-sections. Each pad-seetion consists of a number of layers of Wirecloth 13, which are turned around a holdingplate 14 and then firmly pressed together, so as to form practically a solid mass. Before this pressing, however, the wire-cloth at one edge will be engaged underneath a tongue 15, formed in the plate 14, and a reduced tongue portion 16 at the end of said plate is to be turned over the opposite edge of the layers of wire-cloth. Inconnecting the plate 14. to a finger l0 the end 16 of said plate is to be engaged under the hook end 17 of the finger, as clearly shown in Fig. `2, 'and a screw 18 is passed through au opening in the shank portion of the plate and engages in a tapped hole in the finger. By this construction it is ob- -vious that when afpad-section becomes Worn or useless it may be easily removed and a new section placed ou the holder. I have here shown three iingers l0; but it is obvious that more may be employed, if desired. The three pad-sections form practically a single pad and conform substantially toa gun-barrel.
Having thus describedV my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A gun-cleaner comprising a rod, springfingers on said rod, means for forcing the spring-tingers outward, pad-sections consisting of layers of material pressed together, a holder for each section, consisting of a plate having a tongue portion formed in the plate for engaging With one edge of thematerial and a reduced-tongue portion at the en'd for engaging at the opposite edge of the material, and means for securing the holding-plate to its spring-linger, substantially as specified.
2. A gun-cleanervcomprising a rod, springfingers on the end of said rod, the said springfingers having hook ends, pad-sections consisting of layers of wire-cloth, and a holder foreach section, consistingof a plate having In testimony whereof I have signed my tongue members for engagingopposite edges name to this specification in the presence of of the material, the end of said plate being two subscribing witnesses.
adapted to engage with the hook of the spring- GEORGE HENRY GARRISON. l; nger, and a screw passing through the shank XVitnesses:
of the plate and engaging with the finger, sub- CHAS. BRIFFETT,
stnntially as specified. ISAAC BLUMAUER.
