UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUB ER R. DAVIS, OF OARDINGTON, OHIO.
CAB LE-CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,391, dated July 22, 1902. Application filed June 2, 1902. Serial No. 110,001. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBER R. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cardington,in the county of Morrow and State of Ohio, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Cable-Clips; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to for use in connection with messenger-wires and for other purposes; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings the letter a designates a section of cable, and b a hook for the messenger-Wire, adapted to be connected to the cable by means of a strap 0 and link d, the hook, link, and strap forming the cablegrip. The strap 0 is a ribbon of flexible metal, which is passed around the'cable, and one end of this strap extends through the link d, this end being turned in against the cable, as shown at e, and the other end being turned outward to engage the hook-bearing, as indicated at f. The link is designed to be made of steel, its ends meeting at the middle of the inner branch, as at g, these ends being slightly inclined inward, as shown at h h, in order to give the link a spring action against the loop of the strap engaged thereby. The hook is a lever and cam. The ends or hook-armst are wider apart at the portions 7e, next to the curved cam portions Z, which are connected by the bearing-bar f. The planes of the cam bendsl are transverse to the plane of the portions 7:, and such cams form shoulders which are adapted to engage the free branch m of the link. The opening of the link is but little wider usually than the diameter of the bearing-bar of the hook,- and said opening is just long enough to receive the end of the hook formed by the cams and bearing-bar.
In operation the strap, being connected by one end to the link in such wise that said end is turned inward'against the cable, is passed around the cable, and the other end of the strap is passed around the bearing-bar of the hook, above which the link engages the cams. The end of the strap engaging the bearingbar is turned outward and is drawn upon in such amanner as to inclose the cable therewith neatly, after which the hook, as a lever, is turned back, sothat its cams forcethe link down upon the strap, bending said strap angularly inward against the cable and bearingbar, thereby drawing the strap tight and forming a look. This lock does not interfere with the pivotal freedom of the hook. The grip or clamp will not slip on the cable even if the hook should become disengaged from the messenger-wire. The link having the spring character hereinbefore described will counteract any expansion or contraction and will keep the clamp closed at high tension.
The cam ends of the hook prevent the link from rising out of the lock bend of the strap, so that the fastening is secure.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A cable-grip, consisting of a link, a strap and a lever-cam hook, substantially as speci- 2. The combination with a cable and strap of a link, and a lever-cam hook, substantially as specified. W
3. The combination with a spring-link, of a lever-cam hook, and a'strap forminga cablegrip, substantially'as specified.
4. The combination witha link, a strap and I a lever-cam hook, having cam bends, connected by a bearing-bar, and adapted to engage said link, and lock the same upon the strap end, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
