Holders; and I do hereby declare the follow-1 ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in stamp or die holders, andhas for its object to provide such a device wherein the disad- I 5 vantages arising from using the old form of rigid handle and holder are eliminated, as will hereinafter appear.

In using the ordinary form of stamp-holders it is necessary to apply the stamp to the paper or other object with auniform pressure upon all parts of the stamp or die. To do this,it is necessary to be very careful to press upon the handle in a line directly at right angles to the paper. My invention obviates this disadvantage, and instead of employing a holder having a rigid handle I employ a flexible handle, which may be applied to the ordinary stamp-holder Without material alterations.

Other features of novelty will hereinafter appear, and in order to more fully describe my said invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, Wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device Fig. 2 represents a central section taken vertically through the device, and Fig.3 is a perspective view of the device with the handle removed.

adapted to enter the perforation a in the die or stamp holder A. This plug 0 is provided with the longitudinal perforation c, extending throughout its length. Upon the top of this plug 0 is gormed a ball D, slotted transas at E is a spring, preferably formed of a spring steel wire having one end passed through the slot (Z and perforation c in the plug O,the lower end of 'this wire E being bent, as at 6, after passing through the plug 0. This bent portion will prevent the drawing out of the wire E while the plug 0 is in position. To allow a limited lateral play of the wire E, a recess (1 is provided; The upper end of this wire E is bent into a hook F, having its sides formed substantially diamond-shaped, for a purpose hereinafter to appear.

v ,G is ahandle of any desirable shape, pro vided with the internal bore H of uniform diameter and with the ball-seating 1, adapted to receive the ball D. J is a narrowed neck portion, through which the ball D passes in entering the ball-seating 1. Into thebore H of this handle G is inserted the wire E, carrying the hook F, the same being passed up until the ball D of the plug 0 reaches the narrowed neck J. Pressure is now applied to the parts, when the two halves of the ball D of the plug 0 .will be forced together, allowing the same to pass said narrowed portion J and enter the ball-seat I, when the two halves of the ball will assume their natural position. It will now be seen that while the handle G will normally assumethe position shown in full lines, Fig. 1, relative movement is allowed to take place between the die or stamp holder and the handle when slight pressure is brought to bear, such pressure being due to the stamp or die being impressed unevenly upon the paper.

The hook F fits into the bore H in such manner as to perform the function of a spring engaging thewalls of the bore H, preventing any loose or twisting motion between the handle and die or stamp holder.

While I have shown my invention as embodied in only one form, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to such form, as many changes might suggest themselves, which changes could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. I

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States,'is'

, 1. In a die or stamp holder,- the combination with the holder adapted to carry the stamp or die; of a handle provided with a ball-seat, and a contractible ball carried by said holder normally retaining said handle in an upright position.

2. In a die or stamp holder, the combination with the holder carrying the die or stamp; of a handle provided with a vertical bore, and a ball-seating, at its lower end, a plug carried by said holder having a contractible ball adapted to enter said ball-seat, and a spring adapted to enter the bore of said handle adapted to normally retain said handle in a vertical position.

3. In a die or stamp holder, the combination with the holder carrying the die or stamp, and a ball carried by said holder; of a handle provided with a vertical bore, a ball-seatin g at its lower end to receive said ball, and a spring carried by said holder, adapted to enter said bore and normally retain said handle in a vertical position.

4. In a die or stamp holder, the combination with the holder carrying the die or stamp, and a ball carried by said holder provided with a vertical slot to allow said ball to contract; of a handle provided with a ball-'seat upon its lower end to receive said ball, and means for normally retaining said handle in a vertical position.

5. In a die or stamp holder, the combination with the holder carrying the die or stamp, and a ball carried by said holder provided with a vertical slot to allow said ball to contract; of a handle provided with a ball-seat upon its lower end to receive said ball, and a spring secured in a perforation in said ball, and extending upwardly into the bore of said handle to normally retain the same in a vertical position.

6. In a die or stamp holder, the combination with the holder carrying the stamp or die, and a ball carried by said holder provided with a vertical slot, allowing the sides of said ball to contract; of a handle provided with a vertical bore, a ball-seat formed at the bottom of said bore, provided with a contracted opening through which said contractible ball is adapted to pass, and a spring secured in said ball, and having an enlarged end extending up into said bore to normally retain said handle in a vertical position. v
