UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. MAPES, OF PARIS, ILLINOIS.
HORSE-CANOPY'.
SPECIFICATION arming pere of Lettere retenu No. 705,370, dated July 22, 1902.
Application filed March 14,1902. Serial No. 98,167. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.; Y 1
Be it knownthat 1,1NDQREWI MAPES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Canopy Horse Shades and Fans, of which the following is a specification. l l My invention relates to an improvement in folding canopies for horses, and is adapted to be applied to the tongue or shaft-s of a wagon and may be folded up and extended by the driver1 without leaving the wagon.
The invention is more particularly described in the annexed specification and drawings, in whicli- Figure l shows a top plan view of the canopy extended. Fig. 2 is a side View showing the canopy attached to the tongue T of a wagon for two horses. Fig. 3 shows an end view, and Fig. 4 shows a construction for atjf tachment to the shafts of a wagon for one horse.
The frame comprises the standards R,which have means for attachment tothe tongue T, said means consisting of clamps M. The upper ends of the standards R are connected to two blocks A, which are united by ahlongituf dinal rod F.` The blocks-A carry extensions C, to which are pivoted arms B, to which the canopy is secured.v The pivots are vsome distance from the inner ends of the arms, so as to permit the attachment of coil-springs D, which normally throw the arms o ut to expand and spread the canopy. The canopy is folded by means of cords E, attached to the outer ends of the arms B and leading over pulleys P P on' the rod F to convenient fastening means O on the rear standard R. When the cords are released, the springs D will throw the arms B outward, thus spreading the canopy. The cords E are pulled in when it is desired to fold'the canopy.
- Fig. 4 shows thesame formof canopy, the
ystandards Rr being archedinsteadof straight,
the animal is moving, due to the up-and-down motion of the tongue or shafts.
Having ascertained and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The combination, in a canopy for horses, of the standards carrying the main framebar, said frame-barhaving a block A at each extremity, provided with ylateral extensions,
with arms B pivoted intermediate their ends 'to said extensions, springs D attached at one end to oneend'of said arms and atthe other end to the blocks A, cords E attached to the other ends of said arms, and means for guiding and fastening said cords, as set forth.
2. In a canopy-support, the frame carryingpivoted arms to which the canopy is attached, springs for throwing saidrarms normally outward, meansfor controlling the outward movement of said arms and holding the same in a closed position upon the frame, vand means for supporting the frame upon a vehicle above,` the horse, whereby the action ofthe animalun'der the cover will give resilient motion to the. spring-supported canopy thereby creating a constant air movement bee neath the canopy, as set forth.
ANDREW J. MAPES.
