UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN JOHNSTON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO ARCHIBALD EDW'ARD DOBBS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
FEED-WATER, BURNER, OR LIKE REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION formg part of Letters Patent No. '704,342, dated July 8, 1902.
Application filed Febrnary 1902. Serial Nu. 95,732. No model.)
TO toZZ whom it may concrn:
Be it known that I, JOHN JOHNSTON, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 19 Park road, New Cross, London, S. E., England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Feed-W'ater, Burner, or Like Regulator, (for which I have made application for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 18,8i1, and dated the 20th day of September, 1901,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatns for regnlating both the feed-water supply to boilers and the heating arrangements thereof.
The invention more particularlyrelates to boilers heated by oil and like burners as used upon motor-cars; but it is also applicable to' other purposes.
The invention consists in interposing between the boiler and the feed-pump a regulator through which the feed-water'has to pass on its way to the boiler, the said regulator be ing adapted, according to the boiler pressure, to automatically control the amountof feedsupply and at the same time the burner or draft, according to which type of boiler it is applied.
In carrying the invention into effect in one convenient manner, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the regulator is constructed in the form of a cylinder a, fitted with a piston I), the rod c of which passes out at the top of the cylinder through a cylindrical extension d, having an internal diameter considerably larger than the piston-rod c and terminating in a stuffing-box of the usualform. This extension is in communication with the boiler-feed'pipe e by a suitable passage f, controlled by a non-return valve g of the ball or other type. It is also in communication with the cylinder above the piston by means of a hole h in the cylinder-cover, through which the piston-rod passes. This hole h is of such diameter and the piston-rod c of such form'that when the pisten is in its lower or :normal position there is sufficient area to allow full supply of feed-water to pass from the cylinder a to the boiler-feed pipe e; but when the piston rises the area is lessened until at the highest position of the piston the hole ?L is completely filled up or closed by the piston-rod and the boiler-feed thereby cut ofi. In order to acconplish this, the rod c is in one convenient form, as shown, tapered or enlarged at its lower part. The feed-supply from the pnmp is led to the upper side of the piston b, an air vessel i being interposed be tween the pump-supply pipejand the cylinder a. A pipe k' is led from this air vessel from a point' at rathr a high level in the same to a' passage l in communication with a relief-valve m. The under side of the piston b is in connection by a passage n and suitable pipe o with the boiler-feed pipe e or with the steam-space, accordingly as the application is made to a flash or ordinary boiler, respectively. A safety-valve p is provided in connection With the under side of the piston and is preferably arranged in juxtaposition with the relief-valve m, before referred to, in order that both valves m and p may be loaded by the same spring q, which is caused 'to act upon a cross-lever r or bar hearing on both valve-stems, the spring, however, being adapted to bear nearer the safety-valve 10 than the relief-valve m, the former being thereby heavier loaded.
In operation the feed-pump is arranged to work continuously and also to pump a surplus of water, which escapes by way of the relief-valve m, a snall shifting valve being provided, preferably, upon the feed-pump suction-pipe to enable a snall quantity of air to be fed With the water in order to replenish the air Vessel t".
It will be understood from the foregoing that the piston b is under boiler-pressure on its under side and feed-pump pressure on its upper side. Therefore when the boiler-pressure is low or normal the piston will be low and feed-water allowed to pass to the boiler;
but when the boiler-pressure rises the piston ascends and cuts off the feed-supply to the boiler, the action being automatic.
ln order to effect a regulation of the burner when oil is used or the draft when solid fuel is used corresponding to the Variation of the boiler-pressure, the piston-rod c is extended and connected by a suitable joint s to one end of a rocking lever t, the other end of which is connected by a rod u with the burner or with the draft-regulator, as convenient. In order ICO to limit the movement of this rod u within the extreme range of the bnrner or draft-regn- Iator, suitable steps 'u are provided, and a further adjustment is obtained by making the 5 fulcrum w of the rocking lever t movable.
The fulcrum w in one form consists of a pin fixed to a nnt traveled in guides a: by a screw and handwhee1 Theinvention is not confined to the exact details of Construction hereinbefore described, as the same may be varied to suit the circumstances under which the improvenents are to be applied.
Having thus described my inventionnvhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An apparatus for simultaneously regulating the feed-water supply and heating arrangements for stean-boilers in accordance with the variations in boiler-pressure consisting of, a cylinder divided by a piston into two chambers, one in constant communication with the boiler and the other interpolated between the feed-supply and the boiler, and a conical or like piston-red for controlling the feed-outlet from the iatter chamber and con nected to the burner-supply or furnace-draft regulating arrangements, substantially as hereinbefore described. v
2. An apparatus for simultaneously regulating the feed-Water supply and heating arrangements for steam-boilers in accordance with the variations in boiler-pressure consisting of, a cylinder, a piston therein, an opening in the cylinder-cover connecting one side of the piston with a passage leading to the boiler and fitted with a non-return valve, a second passage leading from the feed-supply to the same side of the piston and fitted with an air vessel and relief-valve, a passage leading from the boiler to the other side of the piston and fitted with a safety-vaive, a conical piston-red, passing through the aforesaid opening in the cylinder-cover and connected to a rocking lever, a fulcrum for said level' and screw adjustment therefor, and a rod pro- Vided with stops and connecting said rocking lever with the burner-supply or furnace-draft regulator, snbstantially as hereinbefore de scribed.
3. In an apparatus for simultaneously regulating the feed-water supply and heating arrangements for steam-boilers in accordance with the boiler-pressure, comprising a cylinder fitted with a piston acted upon on one side by boiler-pressure and on the other by feed-pump pressure the piston-rod control ling both the feed-supply and heating arrangements, the combination of a safety- Valve and a relief-vaive one connected to the boiler side of the piston and the other to the feed side and both adjusted by the same le- Ver and spring substantially as hereinbefore described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J OHNSTON.
