Be it known that we, WILLIAM ELMER and I-I. G.VIIUBERT, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Ozone-Generators and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this speciica tion, in which- Figure I is a sectional elevation of our ozone-generator through the line :n ce', and
Figure 2 is `a top view of the same with the cap T removed.
This inventionrelates to an apparatus in which ozone is generated bythe reaction of certain chemical reagents, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of the apparatus, by which the chemicals are placed so as to react one on the other under the most favorable conditions.
v Description.
Ads a wide-mouth hottleof any ornamental orvoonvenient shape, made of glass, china, or any inoxidizahle material.V` YB is a porous cup, made of suitable clay, and burnt so as to obtain the requisite degree of porousness. The cup B is so shaped that it enters the mouthof the vessel A, and it has a ilange at top so as to :rest on said mouth when placed therein. The bottom partf of the-cup B is madedishing or concave inside, as shown in our drawings, fig. 1, and it has at or near its top part several holesppp, to allow of the exit of ozone from andY of the admission of air in. the vessel A, even if the cup'B lits the mouth oflsaid vessel airtight. D is a glass bottle or vial of ordinary construction, and of such dimensions that it will tit snugly in the cup Il, having its rim level with the rim of the said cup B, as shown in iig. 1. E is a glass rod about the size oi' a goose-quill, of such, Aa length that when placed inthe bottle D, and resting on the bottom of the same, it, the rod E, will. project out of the said vial D a quarter of' an inch,.or thereabout. T is a metal cap, deep enough to touch the mouth of the vial D and leave play between the end of the rod E and said cap T. This cap T acts as a shield to prevent an accidental blow on the end of the rod E injuring the same, or driving it through the bottom oi` the vial D. -M is a metallic ring, of tin-foil or other soft metal, which in N is clenched or bent over the bead of the vessel A, to seal the same and hold'the porous cup B fast thereto. The vessel A is filled with a -porous substance, W, granulated of proper size, (about the size of coos-beans asbestos, pumioe-stone, halted or raw clay, ne., saturated with permanganate oi potassa. Sulphuric acid is put in the vial D, the rod E is placed in said vial D, and there secured by a little plaster of Paris, forming a stopper therefor. The vial D so filled, and provided with the rod El, is now placed in the porous cup B,=and there it is secured oy plaster of Paris or othercement.g, taking care to preserve therein holes P corresponding to thc ones in the porous cup B. The cap T is placed over the rod E to protect it from injury. It is fastened by pasting a piece of paper over, and the porous cup being placed in the vessel A, as indicated by our drawings, the metallic ring M is placed over all, and clenched in N, iinishing' the ozonegenerator. i Operation.
It will be observed that in our ozonefgenerator the two chemical agents required for producing ozone are kept apart, and are both securely packed for transportation or storage. When required for use, the cap T is removed, exposing the protruding part of the rod E. With the handle of alrnife or awooden mall-et a few taps are applied on the end of the rod E, driving it in until it is flush with the balance of the apparatus. This will break the vial D, and allow the sulphuric acid contained therein tovlow inthe cup B.` The sulphuric 'acid filtrating through the porous cup B, will come in contact with the porous granulated substance W, saturated wiih permanganateof potasse. This causes a continuous and sustained production of ozone, which will escape through the holesp p for along period of time.'
In specifying,'the one sulphuric acid, and the other permanganate of potassa, as the two chemical reagents Aused in our improved ozone-generator, we do not wishto he understood as claiming the reaction of' these chemicals as our invention, or as restricting ourselves to their use to the exclusion of other chemicals which may answer the same purpose. These (sulphuric acid and permanganate4 of potasse.) are the chemicals we now employ, but we donot claim them it used for any other purposes or in any other ways than .our peculiar mode of using them.
What wc claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe Uni-ted States,` is
1. The combination and arrangement of the vessel-A with the porous cup B, the ouc filled with the granulated porous substance W, and the other partly filled with the liquid chemical reagent Z in the mauncrsubstam tially and for thc purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the rod E, cement stopper e, and cap T, with the vial D and cup B, arranged 'so as to operatesubstantially in the manner specified.
3. The granulated porous substance W and the liquid chemical Z, in combination with a porous cup B, so that the reaction between the said chemical Z `andsubstance W Will take place as set forth and for the purpose specified of producing ozone.
