WILLIAM DUNHAM FARREN,
PATENT 01mins.
OF DAN VILLE, CALIFORNIA.
RAlLWAY-SEMAPHORE, 80C. 0
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed July 24,1900.
T0 alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DUNHAM FAR- REN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Contra Costa, State of Oalifornia, have invented a new and useful Railway-Semaphore, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway-semaphores. Its objects are to simplify, cheapen, and generally improve the construction of such devices, to render them durable, automatic, and reliable in operation, to give three separate movements or positions of the one semaphore-arm, and by the agency of red, green, and clear disks to indicate the same positions at night. 4
With these objects in View my invention consists of improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts composing a signal of this class, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention most nearly appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompa-. nying drawings, forming apart of this specification, of which Figure 1 is a side view of myimprovement, showing the several positions of one of the arms in dotted-lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view, the arm being in an extended position. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section of the upper end of the post, showing the manner of operating the lamp.
In constructing a signal in accordance with my improvement I employ a hollow post A, having its upper end terminating in a hood or case a, which is provided with openings through which the light' shines. In the upper portion of the hood is journaled a horizontal shaft to, upon the outer end of which is secured the semaphore-arms B and 0, each having a series of apertures b and 0, respectively, which are adapted to be brought into register with the opening upon either side of the hood. The outer ends of the arms are provided with the usual semaphore-boards B and C, while their opposite ends are provided with counterbalance-weights, as shown at B Patent N0. 704,015, dated July 8, 1902.
Serial No. 24,674. (No model.)
and C Each arm is provided with a vertically-extending arm or rod 12 and c, to which is attached cords, whose opposite ends are connected to cranked leverand by which the arms are raised or lowered.
The'lamp or lantern F is adapted to operate within the post, and in order to provide a simple means for raising it I attach to the bail of the lamp a cord G, which is passed up over the shaft a and then carried down to within easy reach of the operator, when it is securely fastened within the post.
In order to obtain access to the lamp, 1 provide the lower end of the post with a door A and the upper end of the post is preferably provided with guides Ai'whioh may be socured in any suitable manner.
The particular advantage of arranging the arms as described is to enable the operator to easilyand positively display the following signs: first, a horizontal position, meaning to stop; second, when the arms are arranged upon an angle of forty-five degrees means to slow down, caution, block or track 00- cupied, while the third position, in which the arm hangs perfectly vertical, indicates a clear track.
The arms may be painted red and green, as usual, while the apertures are provided with similar-colored lines in order to make the signals discernible at night.
From the foregoing the simplicity and advantage of my improvement will be readily apparent, and it will also be observed that the arms by one movement of either lines will be operated simultaneously, thus rendering the signal discernible from either side.
Having fully described my invention,-what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, is-
The combination of a hollow post whose upper end terminates in an enlarged hoodsection and whose opposite faces are provided with apertures, a shaft journaled in the said hood and having its ends projecting through the hood, semaphore-armssecured-to the ends of the shaft, the said arms having a series of openings arranged intermediate its ends, one end. of the arm having a counterbalanceweight secured thereto, rods projecting from the arms, cords connected to the rods for operating the arms, a lantern arranged within the hood and having a cord connected thereto which passes up over and around the said shaft and suspends the lantern in an elevated In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
