Description

Patented July I, I902.
J. D. .HICKMAN.
TROLLEY POLE. (Apphcation filed Oct. 11, L901;
(No Model.)
* UNITED STATES 1 PATENT FFICEQ JOHN D. HICKMAN, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
TROLLEY-POLE.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 703,921, dated July 1, 1902.
I Application filed October 11, 1901. Serial No. 78,332- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that 1, JOHN D.HIOKMAN, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have made a'certain new and useful Invention in Trolley-Poles; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my pole. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section, the raised position of head B being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail section of a modified form of spring for the head of the pole. I
This invention has relation to trolley-poles, and has for its object the provision of a novel form of head for such pole with the object of preventing the trolley-wheel from becoming disengaged from the conducting-wire'and allowing the ready disengagement thereof by means of the pull-cord without disturbing the adjustment of the pole proper.
With this object in view the invention con sists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and
pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the trolley-pole, and B the head thereof, usually about two or two and one-half feet in length and hinged tothe pole at its lower end at b.
O is a plate-spring disposed below the head B and secured to depending extension a of such as to carry it as much as twelve inches upwardly or out of line when the trolley is disengaged from its wire.
near its upper portion for disengaging the trolley from its wire.
Fig. 3 of the drawings illustrates a modification of my invention in which a coil-spring E surrounds the hinge-pin of the head and is arranged to exert an upward pressure upon the head in place of the plate-spring; but I use the plate-spring in my preferred construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1; The combination with a trolley-pole, of a head pivoted thereto, the plate-spring carried by saidpole, and having the bracingroller at its upper end engaging said head, and preventing lateral displacement thereof, and stops for limiting the swing of said head in both directions, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a trolley-pole, of a head pivoted thereto, the plate-spring carried by said pole, and having "the bracing grooved roller at its upper end embracing said head, the securing-bolt for said spring extended to form a stop for limiting the downward swing of said head, and the stop for limiting the upward swing of said head, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN D.- HIGKMAN.
