To (ZZZ whom, it may concern,-
Be it known that I, KARL DEINLEIN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Pilsen, in the Province of Bohemia, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improve: ments in Gun-Carriages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates totop-carriages for ordnance provided with means for checking the recoil, and according thereto such topcarriage comprises a guide for those parts that slide backward and then forward each time a shot is fired and protect the recoilchecking means and its mechanism from injury by the entrance of dirt or foreign'bodies and from stoppages caused by external shocks.
The top-carriage" comprises a hollow body that surrounds and fits with more or less play the movable part of the recoil-checking means,
which is connected to the rearportion of the gun-barrel, is closed at its front end beyond the forward point of connection between the gun-barrel and the recoil-checking means, The hollow body is also provided alongits upper part with a slot that extends rearward from the forward point of connection with the gun-barrel just referred to. For the purpose of guiding the recoil-checking means, which partakes of the backward and forward movements of the gun, there are arranged in the hollow body rings that engage with corresponding surfaces formed on the recQiLchecking means th roughout its entire length.
One example of a top-carriage according to this invention, in combination with a gun and its recoil-checkingmeans', is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a section of the top-carriage, and the parts are in the positions they occupy before firing.- Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the exception of the hollow body, which is shown in section, showing the parts inthepositionstheyoccupyafterfiring. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical cross-sections corresponding to the lines A B and 0 D, respectively, of Fig. 1.
The top-carriage comprises a hollow body d, (which in the example is cylindrical, but may be rectangular or of any other desired form,) thatincloses the recoil-checking means and is so arranged that the part of the hollow body that remains. at rest during the recoil surrounds the part ofthe recoil-checking means that takes part in the recoil movement of the gun. In other respects the construction of a top-carriage according to this invention may be varied as desired, and the checking of the recoil may be effected by hydraulic or other means, while the return of the gunto the firing position maybe efiected either by means of a power-absorbing spring or by compressed air or by'other suitable means.
In the example shown the cylinder a of a hydraulic brake, which is connected in a suitablemanner to the rear portion of the gun 17, forms the part of the recoil-checking means that takes part in the: recoil of the gun, and the stationary part is formed by the piston-rod e, which is attached atthe front to the topcarriage d and passes through a stuffing-box c of the cylinder at andjthe retarding-piston f. A coiled spring h, inserted between the piston and the end of the cylinder, serves for returning the gun to the firing position.
The hollow body d is entirely closed at the front, but is open at the rear end, and the rear end of its upper portion is slotted from the part (marked 6) at which the forward end of the connection of the gun b with the movable parts of the recoil-checking means is located when the gun is at rest. This slot is preferably made as narrow as possible and contains (when the gun is at rest).the connections between the gun and the recoilchecking means, the joints at each side being provided with a closure-plate 2', formed of leather, sheet metal, or the like. Theportion of the slot which would; otherwise be open during the recoil of the gun becomes covered as the gun moves backward by a covering-plate 7a, which is connectedv to the gun at m and n, so that foreign bodies, which might cause damage or prevent the return of the backwardly-moved parts, are prevented from reaching the interior of the hollow body (Z. The guiding of the recoil-checking means in the hollow body d is effected by a number of guide-ringsj, inserted in the hollow body and provided with ribs and grooves which fit into corresponding grooves and ribs and formed throughout the entire length of the recoil-carriage cylinder at.
The hollow body 61 is provided on its exterior with projectionssuch, for example, as trunnionsfor the purpose of connecting it to the gun-carriage and is arranged to so surround the recoil-checking means as to leave more or less play, so that dents (if any) in the hollow body (Z shallnot interfere with the motion of the recoil-checking means.
mounted in said hollow body, provided with a pair of projections adapted to extend through said slot and engage with a gun to cause the operation of the recoil-checking means during the action of firing, a plate conforming to the top of the hollow body and adapted to be carried by the forward part of the underneath portion of the gun and moving with the latter for closing the exposed part of said slot, means arranged in said hollow body and surrounding said recoil-checking means for guiding the same, and a pair of V-shaped closure-plates mounted upon the hollow body and adapted to close the joint between said body and gun, substantially as herein shown and described.
