To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, OTTO LAUBER and FRIEDRICH STOCK, residing at Essen-on-the- Ruhr, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ordnance, of
which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ordnance in which the gun-barrel alone recoils; and its ,object is to provide means for braking re the recoil and bringing the barrel forward again and whereby the employment of the hydraulic brake is rendered unnecessary.
According to the present invention this end is attained by connecting the barrel by means of stafi-shaped lamellze which pass through an elastic lameliee pressure-bearing to the movable abutment forthe returning-spring.
A form of construction of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows, partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section, an apparatus according to this invention in connection with those parts of a gun with which the same coacts, the said parts being shown in the firing position. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. '1 lookingfrom the left. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of that part of the device next the breech end of the gun and in the position which the parts assume directly after the commencement of the recoil. Fig. t is a side elevation of the plate-pressure bearing in the position of rest and on a larger scale. Fig. 5 is the corresponding top plan. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of 5 Fig. 4 looking from -the left. Figs. 7 to 9 show a detail, hereinafter referred to, in side, end, and plan views. Fig. 10is aview of the movable abutment for the returning-spring. Fig. 11 shows in plan, on a reduced scale, the
lamellse disconnected from the gun.
The 'gun is carried in the usual way in a cradle A, in the ]-shaped trough of which the device for braking the recoil and bringing the barrel forward again is mounted. (See Fig. 1.) The staff-shaped lamellzc B B B of which the lamellae B B are of variable breadth for a purpose to be hereinafter explained, are rigidly attached to the horn D of the breech-piece, and consequently take part in both the recoil and forward movement of the barrel. The ends of the lamellae B B B next the muzzle of the gun are rigidly attached to a sleeve E, while an internal screw thread on this sleeve ens gages a head-screw F, against which lies the abutment G for the returning-spring. This abutment G (see also Fig. 10) consists of two concentric rings, which are connected to: gether by two cross-pieces g, diametrically op.-v posite each other. The inner ring of the abut- 6o ment G embraces'the sleeve E, the outer ring and the cross-pieces 9 being designed to guide the abutment upon a sleeve K during the recoil and forward return of the gun-barrel. This sleeve K is provided, for the purpose of guiding the abutment, with two longitudinal slots 75 along the greater part of its length. The returning-spring H is pushed onto the sleeve K and bears at one end against the movable abutment G and at the other end against an annular flange h on the sleeve K. This flange bears against a vertical abutment L, rigidly connected to the cradle and which is provided with a recess for the stall-shaped l'amellae B B B The elastic lamellated pressure-bearing, Figsl, 3, and lto 6, through which the staid-shaped lamellze pass, consistsv of plate-formed lamellze C Q C C", two sets of plate-springs P, and abutment-plates N for these springs. The parts ofthis pressure 8o bearing are horizontal and are inclosedbetween two vertical plates M connected by stay-bolts m, so that they are free to move vertically within these plates M. The lamel he 0 C C C are so arranged that one stafishaped lamella B,B ,or B passesbetween each two. The springs P lie between the outer lamellzc O U and the abutmenteplates N, Above and below the pressure-bearing is an; ranged a wedge-shaped plate R. One plate R lies close to the under side of the slide for the barrel and the other on the bottom of the cradle A. These plates R form a casing, which decreases in height in the direction of the recoil and in which the pressure-bearing, 5 with the plates M, between the abutment and a second vertical'abutment S, likewise rigidly connected with the cradle,.is free to slide. This abutment S is provided with recesses for this purpose, in which the nuts of the stay-bolts m can enter. Between the abutment-plates N and the wedge-shaped tion with a cradle, a barrel sliding on the craa die, a sleeve connected to the cradle, and a return-spring surrounding the sleeve, of lamellzc arranged within the sleeve and connected to the barrel and to the spring, an elastic friction device through which the lam'ellic work having a limited play thereon, and wedging-plates one of which is fixed and the other of which partakes of the limited play of the friction device.

10. A brake for recoil-guns, comprising a lamella, and an elastic friction device through which the lamella works, one connected with 'the gun and the other with the gun-mount, wedging-plates compressing the friction device when recoil takes place, and a lever carried with the friction device, impinging and receiving movement from the lamella and also compressing the friction device.
11, A brake for recoil-guns, comprising the fixed and moving lamell-tc arranged in frictiona-l relation, one of which has a varying surface, means for forcing the lamellzc together to increase the friction between them, operated by the varying surface of the lamell ze.
l2. A-brake for recoil-guns, comprising alternated fixed and moving lamellze, a lever forcing said lamellze together into frictional relation, and engagement between the lever and the moving lamellzc, moving the lever upon its fulcrum as the gun moves.
13. A brake for recoil-guns, comprising alternated fixed and moving lamelhc, an anglelevcr forcing the lamellzc together to increase their frictional relation, and a hearing between a moving lamella and the angle-lever; said moving lamella havinga varying surface constructed to move said angle-lever.
14. A brake for recoil-guns, comprising fixed and moving lainellze in frictional relation one of which is provided with a varying surface, a lever forcing the lamellze together to increase their friction, and an eccentric interposed between the lever and a moving lamella, causing the former to he moved by the latter.
15. A brake for recoilguns, comprising fixed lamellte, moving lamellte, one of which has a varying surface, and in frictional relation to the fixed lamellzc, and an angle-lever forcing the lamellte together to increase their frictional relation, having an eccentric hearing against the varying surface of the moving lamella, and receiving therefrom movement which rocks the angle-lever upon its fulcrum. i A brake for recoil-guns, comprising 'turn movement of the gun.

A brake for recoil-guns, comprising fixed lamellre, moving lamellze, having two l varying surfaces, and in frictional relation to the fixed lamellee, an-angle-lever forcing the lamellze together to increase their frictional relation, when rocked upon its fulcrum, two eccentrics upon said angle-lever arranged to contact with the varyingsurface, of the-moving larnellze, and connections moving one of said eccentrics into impingement with a varying face of a moving lamella during recoil and the other eccentricinto impingement with a varying face of a moving lamella. during re- 19. A brake for recoil-guns, comprising fixed lamellze, moving lamellaa, having varying surfaces, and in frictional relation to the fixed'lamellae, an angle-lever forcing the lamellze together to increase their frictional relation, when rocked upon its fulcrum, two eccentrics upon said angle-lever arranged to contact with varying surfaces of the moving lamellzc when turned upon their axes, and a crank-shaft upon which said eccentrics are mounted, moving one of said eccentrics into -impingement with the varying face of a moving lamella during recoil and the other eccentric into impingement with the varying face'of a lamella during return movement.
