LORENZO A. STEWART, OF WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
l-,lERNIAL TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,847', dated July 1, 1902. Application filed August 17, 1900. Serial No. 27,201. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern. Y j
Be it known that I, LORENZO A. STEWART,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Waukegan, in the county of Lake and'State of Illinois, have invented certain new"and` useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object is to provide a simply-constructed and thoroughlyefticient form of truss for use in cases of inguinal hernia, either external or oblique or internal or direct.V i
The invention consistsinthenovel form of truss-pad, together with other features ofcoustruction of the trusseas a whole, as'will be hereinafter fully described andjclaimed.
In the accompanying;drawings," forming a part of the specification, and inf'which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated a form of embodif' ment of my invention, it being understood that the same may be varied without dcparting from lthe spirit of the invention, and in these drawings- Figure 1 is a viewin perspective,.,exhibitin g struction of the pad; and Fig'. tis aviewin plan, exhibiting the truss as a whole.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the pad, B the Waist-strap, and C the center strap. The waiststrap C has adjustablyconnected with it a short strap ZJ, carrying a plate h2, provided with an opening, and the center strap carries a similar plate c, thefunction of these two plates being describedfarther on. The invention resides particularly in the pad. Thispadisbypreferencemadeofmetal,
preferablyof aluminiumton account of its lightness and its non-oxidizing properties, and is provided with an enlarged head c, which is hollowedout, as at ft2, for lightness,
` leaving a center core cf'and a surrounding rim a4.
The outer or back- From the head the pad graduallyY Lcurvedsurface of this horn or finger is hollowed out, as shown at a6, to present edges or 'tianges a7 for engaging with the part carrying the pad, thereby to hold the pad in position against shifting laterally when positioned on kthe wearer.
The pad-carrying portion b3 of the waistp strap is constructed, preferably, of leather on the outside and Velvet or other soft yielding material on the inside, the particular function of the velvet being to permit the edges or ribs a7 to sink thereinto, and thus prevent Vthe shifting of the pad in use. The pad is secured' in posit-ion on the waist-strap by a screw as, which passes through a plate c on the ,outer side of the strap and into the pad. lWhile the screw is herein shown, it is to be understood that'I do not limit my invention to this particular form of holding means, as a rivet or other suitable fastening device may be employed.A 'Ihe plate a9 carries tWo headed lugs am and all, arranged en opposite sides of the plate a9, the lug alo 'to be engaged by the piatec of thev center strap C and the lug autoI be engaged by the plate b2 of the waiststrap,
When the truss is positioned as shown in Fig. ,1, the'hornor finger t5 will be caused to press against the inguinal canal, aud the plate (i2-"will then be brought into engagement with the lug au. The center strap will then be passed between the legs of the wearer on one lside of the scrotum and the plate c brought into engagement with the lug d10. When thus positioned, the truss will be held in position against shifting, and owing to the manner in which it is constructed and adjusted will be found to be very easy to wear, obviating all inconvenience and pain to the user, such as accompanies the use of most trusspads employed for the treatment of inguinal hernia. f
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to Asecure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates, isl. As a new'article of manufacture, a trusspad formed with a fiat bearing-surface substantially circulan in outline and an inflexible hornprojecting therefrom, the horn being curve'd"`to'v`-`fard the body of the wearer and away from the supporting-strap, subs tan- ICO Athe securing-strap and terminating. beyond 2. A truss-pad comprising a body portion l substantially circular in outline, a horn formed integral with the body portion and extending therefrom, the body portion 'adapted to be centrally pivoted to a securing-strap, thus enabling the horn to be brought to bear upon different portions of the anatomy about the body portion as a center, without altering the application of the body portion, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a trusspad formed wholly of non-corrosive metal, and having a flat body portion, and ahorn or finger, the pad being provided upon its back with projecting ribs, the said horn being curved and adapted to extend inward into contact with the body of the wearer, when the pad is in position, substantially as described.
4. In a truss, the combination with a securing-strap, of a pad, the body portion thereof present-ing a flat bearingsurface substantially circular in outline, an iniiexible horn integral with the body portion and projecting therefrom, said horn being curved inward toward the body of the wearer and away from the plane of the bearing-surface of the body portion, the body portion centrally pivoted to the securingstrap, thus adapting the curved horn to be brought to bear upon different portions of the anatomy without altering the application of the body portion, substantially as described. l
5. A truss comprising a pad formed with a iat body portion and a curved horn or finger hollowed out to form ribs extending therefrom, the said horn being curved and adapted to extend inward into contact with the body of theA wearer, when the pad is in position, means for securing the pad to the body of the wearer, and yielding material interposed between the securing means and the ribs of the horn, substantially as described.
G. A truss comprising a waist-strap carrying a plate, a center strap also carrying a plate, a pad carried by the waist-strap, the pad having a iiat body portion, and a curved horn or finger, the horn or finger having itsv back formed with one or more ribs and yielding material interposed between the waiststrap and the ribs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
