SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,704, dated July 1, 1902.
Application filed March 18, 1902. Serial No. 98,863. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LADAM HOFMANN, a citizen of Germany, residing at Munich, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall Nails, Pegs, or Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same.
The present invention relates to wall nails, pegs, or pins; and it consists in the details of construction hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In order to render the present specification easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout both views.
Figure 1 is a section through one part of the nail or peg, and Fig. 2 a similar section through the prolongation of the same.
In driving wall-nails into brickwork the distance to which they are driven in in order to attain sufficient hold in the wall to support the object to be suspended depends upon Whether they strike the brick or the mortar joint, it being necessary in the latter case to drive the nail farther into the wall. According to the present invention the nail may be prolongated, according to the distance it is driven into the wall.
The nail consists of the pointed section a, having a shoulder a and a threaded spindle b extending therefrom. This part of the nail is first driven into the wall, and if it proves long enough the head or button 6 may be screwedonto the spindle b and the object hung uponit. If, however, the first section has not got sufficient hold-in the wall'the second section is attached. The second section consists of a sleeve 0, having an interior thread to fit that of the threaded spindle Z), as indicated at d, and a shoulder c of about the same diameter as the part a at a.
The sleeve c is screwed onto the spindle I) up tothe shoulderja, when the compound nail] thus formed may be driven a correspondingly greater distance into the wall,
the sleeve 0 having a screw-spindle 19 extending from its shoulder. Any number of these sections may be added, and the button 0 is finally screwed onto the screw-spindle b, which finally projects from the wall.
In driving the sections in it is advisable to place a piece of pipe or tube over the screwspindle Z; or b, which pipe or tube rests on the shoulder a or c, as the case may be, in order to avoid spoiling the thread, or a bolt having a corresponding boring may be placed over the threaded spindle to prevent the blows of the hammer from striking the end of the screw-spindle.
I claim as my invention- A wall nail, peg or pin consisting of aplurality of sections, each having a reduced screw-threaded spindle at one end,one of said sections having its other end pointed, the other section having an internally-threaded sleeve at the end opposite its spindle and arranged to engage the screw-threaded spindle of the pointed section, in combination with a threaded button arranged to engage the spindle of either section.
