SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,702, dated July 1, 1902. Applioationiled February 17, 1902. Serial No. 94,509. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom, it incty concern:
s'rEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blodgett, in the county of Scott and State of Missouri, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Stovepipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de-k scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation-to improvements in stovepipes; and it consists in the novel construction of pipe more fully set forth in` the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure lis an elevation of one of the pipe-sections shown in its distended position. Fig. 2 is a similarl view showing the same snugly embracing a contiguous section. Fig. Sis a transverse sectionon line 3 3of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a similar section on line 4 4. of Fig. 2.
The object of my invention is to construct a stovepipe-section which can be readily coupled to the next contiguous section, forming therewith a tight joint,'such joint` being effA fected by the drawingtogether of the adjacent overlapping edges of thepi-pe, as will more fully appear from a detailed'description of the invention, which is as follows:
Referring to the drawings, P representsthe pipe-section, and P one of the contiguous sections. Disposed adjacent to the inner overlapping edge of the pipe is a slot 1, inclinedj to said edge at anacute angle, there being formed along the major portion of the same edge a series of parallel slots 2 3 4, disposed in planes at right angles to the axis of the pipe. Disposed adjacent to the outer overlapping edge of the pipe and parallel to said edge is a slot I', asliding wing-bolt 5 being passed through both slots. Carried by the overlapping edge also areav series of rivets 6,
whose shanks loosely pass through the parallel slots 2'3 4,' a fixed rivet 7 securing the seam formed bythe overlapping edges at the opposite end of the pipe. When the sliding bolt 5 is shoved to the upper ends of the slots 1 l', the peripheral dimensions are enlarged at that end of the pipe a distance equal to the base of a triangle Whose hypotenuse is the slot l andwhose perpendicular is the slotv 1. At 5o the same time the perimeter along the edges is enlarged to progressively-diminishing dis.
tances substantially equal to the progressively-diminishing transverse slots 2 3 4., the
rivet 7 serving as a pivot for said distending 55 edges. By inserting a pipe-section P' into the upper end of the pipe P and then shifting the bolt 5 to the opposite ends of the slots l 1' the overlapping edges will be drawn together, and thus one pipe-section can be readily coupled to the next succeeding one, as is obvious.
.(See Fig. 2.) The next lower section P of course receives the base of the pipe immediately above it, so that a number of sections can be coupled at a moments notice, and this (in a measure) independent of any variation in the cross-sectional areas of the pipes. The rivets 6 serve to guide the edges in their movements, as is obvious, the rivets in other respects serving their ordinaryfunction of holding the overlapping edges of the pipe together; v Y y Having described my invention, what I claimy is- A stovepipe'comprising a section having overlapping edges, the inner edge having at one end an inclined slot located adjacent thereto, and the outer edge having a slot parallel therewith, a sliding bolt operatin g in said slots, a series of rivets carried by the outer lap of the pipe, the inner lap having disposed a series of transverse closed slots of progressively-diminishing dimensionsv for the reception of the rivets, the inner ends of said transverse slots and the adjacent endof the inclined slot being disposed in a line substantially parallel to the edge of the inner lap, and axed rivetsecuring the overlapping edges at the opposite end, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature Yin presence of two witnesses.4
