LIQUID DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 703,681, dated July 1 1902.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G.VOIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and .State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid Door-Checks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in liquid door-checks; and the objects of my invention are economy in construction and efficiency in operation, especially with reference chamber and the liquid-chamber.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line at. of Figs. 2 and 3, partly in elevation, of my liquid doorcheck. Fig. 2 is a detached plan view of the case, broken away on one'side and with the cap removed. Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view of the diaphragm that divides the spring- Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cam and its shaft. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the said cam and lower end of its shaft on the line y yof Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a partial section of the diaphragm, Fig. 3, on the lines.
A designates the case, having at its upper end a spring-chamber 6 and at its lower end a liquid-chamber, which is subdivided into the cam-chamber '7 and cylinder 8, the said three compartments being eccentrically arranged, whereby the rear wall of the case, on
which the securing-bracket 9 is formed, has
the various parts of its length more nearly the same distance from the door, andthe camshaft is eccentric to the cylinder, so as to press more nearly on the center of the piston.
The cam-shaft 10 is provided with a lever-' arm 11, of any ordinary construction,,for use with proper connections to turn shaft in openin g and closing the door. As shown, the said shaft goes through the sleeve 12, to which the inner end of the spring 13 is secured, then through the diaphragm 14, with its cam 15 in the cam-chamber in position to engage and reciprocate the piston 16 in the cylinder 8.
In generalthese parts may be of any ordinary construction, although one feature of my invention is particularly adapted for a 50 door-check case having its liquid and spring chamber with the liquid-chamber.

The under side of the diaphragm 14 is provided with a central hub, on which I form a short cylindrical portion 21, with a shoulder 22 at its upper end. At the outer portionof the under sideof the diaphragm 14 there are two annular seats 23 and 24, with a groove 25 between them, preferably of a semicircular form, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1 and full lines inFig. 6. v The edge of the diaphragm is threaded, andit screws into a threaded portion of the case at the bottom of the spring-chamber, the shoulder or seat against which to screw the diaphragm being formed by the junction of the spring- By referenegtoFigs. 1 and 2 it will be seen that this seat or shoulder is quite narrow on the rear or bracket side of the case. I therefore place upon the said seat an annular plate 31 of Fig. 1 of the same diameter as the lower face of'the diaphragm at its annular seat 23 and of a width equal to the radial distance from the outer side of the seat 23 to the inside of the seat 24 on the under face ofsaid diaphragm, so as to form an abutment for both of the said annular seats. 23

The upper faceof the diaphragm is provided with two recesses 26 to receive a proper key or wrench for screwing the diaphragm home, and these recesses have correspondingreinforcements 27 on the under side of the diaphragm, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The diaphragm will be packed with lead paint, and if properly applied the said paint will all be retained in the recess and make a tight joint, without any of the paint working down into the liquid-chamber.
The upper side of the hub of the cam 15 is provided with an annular groove 28, into which the short cylindrical portion 21 of the diaphragm 14 fits, only the groove is made deeper than the said portion 21 is long, so that a chamber is formed within the cam-hub below the end of the said portion 21, as shown in Fig. 1. Two holes 29 extend from the bottom of this chamber or bottom of the groove 28 to the under side of the cam, as shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5. The upper end of the hub 30 of the cam and the shoulder 22 of the diaphragm 14 form opposing abutments for resisting the upward endwise movement of the cam and cam-shaft.
The liquid I prefer to use is oil, and then the chamber within the cam is an oil-collecting chamber. Any oil that passes between the end of the hub 30 and shoulder 22 and works downwardly therefrom will be collected in the chamber or space at the bottom of the annular groove in the cam and then passes downwardly through the holes 29 to the under side thereof, and thus any oil working upwardly on the shaft through the stuflingbox is prevented. This construction is simple and inexpensive and by actual use has been proved efficient.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a liquid door-check, the combination of the case having the liquid-chamber and the spring-chamber eccentrically arranged, with the diaphragm screwed into the lower end of the spring-chamber to divide it from the liquid-chamber, the said diaphragm having the two annular seats on its under face with a groove between, and the annular plate seated on the shoulder at the junction of the liquid and spring chambers between the said shoulder and the annular seats of the said diaphragm, substantially as described.
2. In a liquid door-check, the combination of the case having the liquid-chamber and spring-chamber, with a diaphragm dividing the said chambers, and the cam-shaft and cam, the confronting faces of the said cam and diaphragm being formed with the annular groove and cylindrical portion fitted thereto of less length than the depth of the said groove for forming a collecting-chamber, and with endwise-bearing abutments outside of the said cylindrical portion, the said cam being also perforated from the said collectingchaniber downwardly to its under side, substantially as described.
