Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 9, 1913.
DOOR-CONTROLLING MEANS.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, Hartford count-y, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Controlling Means, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved door closer and check of the so-called sill type, and the object of the invention is to provide various improved features of construction aiming at simplicity and ease of adjustment, durability and effectiveness of operation.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View with the top plate or cover removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a cross section. Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 illustrate details of construction.
1 represents the main casingv or frame which provides two spaced chambers separated by a partition 2. The upper chamber contains the closer mechanism, while the lower chamber (cylindrical in form) contains the checking mechanism.
3 is a spindle suitably mounted in the main casing 1, the lower part of said spindle having a segmental gear 3 for operating a piston 4, said piston having two opposite sets of rack teeth 4 on each side of a slot therein for engagement by said gear segment, so that when the spindle is turned in either direction, it will operate the piston. The pis ton is provided with a head 4 which properly fits in the cylindrical checking chamber, which latter contains liquid whereby the movement of the piston is retarded when moving in one direction. A check valve 5 in the piston head 4', or other suitable mechanism, permits the piston to move freely in an opposite direction. The cylindrical checking chamber is provided with a by-pass for the liquid, which by-pass may be formed in an extension 6.
7 is a valve controlling the by-pass.
6 is a by-pass groove in the inner side wall of the cylinder leading from the end of the offset by-pass to the capped end of the cylinder.
8 represents a removable cap at the end of the checking cylinder for gaining access to the interior.
9 represents a suitable bearing and stufling box for the spindle 3.
10 represents a lever arm mounted on the upper end of the spindle outside of the casmg.
l represents the top plate or cover for the casing 1. The cover 1 has what may be termed a hand hole therein provided with a closure plate'l which may be detached at any time to afford access to the interior closer mechanism. The spindle 3 has fixed thereto an eccentric preferably in the form of a double crank extension 11 carrying the pins 1212 at each end.
14 is a slide mounted to slide longitudinally in the guide-way in the upper chamber of the casing 1.
15 is an adjustable cross-head carried by the slide 14 and adjustable longitudinally relatively thereto. The preferable means of adjustment comprises a threaded stem 16 carried by the, cross-head upon which is mounted a nut 17 bearing against an abutment or shoulder on'the slide 14 (as shown in Fig. 1). By turning the nut 17, the
cross-head can be moved to and fro.
18 is an adjustable hook carrier pivotally mounted at 20 on the slide 14, preferably underneath the same, said carrier pivotally carrying the links or hooks 19 and 19*, the ends of which respectively engage the studs or pins 12, 12 of the double crank 11. The carrier 18 may be angularly adjusted on its pivot20 to vary the effective positions of the hooks 19-19 Suitable means is provided to lock the hook carrier 18 when properly adjusted. The preferred means comprises one or two clamping screws 2121, which pass through slots in the slide 14 and into threaded openings in the carrier 18 as shown, so that by loosening up on said screws, the frame may be shifted. 2222 are spiral compression springs both of which at one end press against the end wall of the casing 1, and both of which at the other end press against the cross-head 15. The upper chamber within the frame or housing 1 is preferablyprovided with parallel side channels to receive, guide or steady the springs 22. By
reason of the fact that the maximum length of spring is employed (practically the full length of the case), a very substantial factor of safety and durability largely in excess of the limit'required, is guaranteed;
In operation, the check should first be fitted to the particular door with which it is to be employed. If for any reason the arm or lever 10 does not correctly aline with the door casing or sill, it requires but a moment to loosen the clamping screws 21 and toshift the position ofthe hook carrier 18 so that the proper alinement of the lever 10 can be effected. When this is efiected, the clamping screws 21 are'set downtightly. If more or less pressure is desired, thismay be varied by shifting the tension adjusting nut 17. As soon as the, correct adjustment has: been established, the hand hole cover l may be restored in. place and; the entire mechanism is then ready for service as soon asthe, door proper has been secured. to the lever 10.

distance therefrom than. theclamping screws 21 so that itv takesa longer movement of the ends of the carrier to shift the relative position, of the hooks19 and 1.9 thanwould be the case if these pivot points for the hooks were farther away from the center. By this construction a, very slight strain on the clamping screws 21 serves to efiectively hold the carrier, when adjusted, against acci-. dental displacement. As shown in Fig. 1,v

In a door closer mechanism, a casing, at door-controlling spindle rotatably mounted therein, a slide arranged to reciprocate in said casing, an eccentric on the spindle, a connection between said eccentric and said slide, a pair of spiral compression springs arranged on opposite sides of the spindle and operatively connected with said slide, means for adjusting the operative connection between said springs and said slide, said casing including a removable cover plate, said cover plate having a hand-hole passage therein to afford access to the adjusting mechanism, and a removable cover for said hand hole.

Ina door closer mechanism, a casing, a door-controlling spindle rotatably mounted, therein, aslide arranged to reciprocate in said casing, a double eccentric on said spindle, means for connecting said slide with said eccentricsincluding a pair of hooked links, a. pair of spiral compression springs arranged. on opposite sides. of the spindle and. operatively connected with the slide.
6. In a door closer mechanism, a casing, a door-controlling spindle rotatably mounted therein, a slide arranged to reciprocate in said casing, a double eccentric on said spindle, means for connecting said slide with said eccentrics including a pair of links, with means for adjusting the normal position of said links, and a pair of spiral compression springs arranged on opposite sides of the spindle and operatively connectedv with the slide.
7 In a door closer mechanism, a casing, a door-controlling spindle rotatably mounted therein, a slide arranged to reciprocate in said casing, a double eccentric on said spindle, means for connecting said slide with said eccentrics including a pair of links, with means for adjusting the normal position of said links, said means comprising a carrier pivoted to the slide, with means for adjusting the angular position of said carrier, and a pair of spiral compression springs arranged on opposite sides of the spindle and operatively connected with the slide.
8. In a door closer mechanism, a casing, a door-controlling spindle rotatably mounted therein, a slide arranged to reciprocate in said casing, a double eccentric on said spindle, means for connecting said slide with said eccentrics including a pair of links, with means for adjusting the normal position of said links, said means comp-rising a carrier pivoted to the slide, with means for adjusting the angular position of said carrier, said links being pivoted to the carrier on opposite sides of a center line through the closer mechanism, and a pair of spiral compression springs arranged on opposite sides of the spindle and operatively connected with the slide.

In a door closer mechanism, a casing, a door-controlling spindle rotatably mounted therein, a slide arranged to reciprocate in said casing, a double eccentric on said spindle, a connection between each end of said eccentric and said slide including two separate links each having a relatively sliding connection with said eccentric, with means for adjusting the position of said links, a pair of spiral compression springs arranged on opposite sides of said spindle and adjustably and operatively connected with said slide, in combination with a door checking mechanism operatively connected with said spindle, and including a checking cylinder and checking piston therein. 7
