SASH-LOCK.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,634, dated July 1, 1902.
4 Application filed October 25, 1901. Serial No. 79.969. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOWARD ALLEN BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olarksville, in the county of Red River and State of Texas, have inventedanew and use ful Sash-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in sash-locks. 1
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of sash-locks and to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive one of great strength and durability adapted to be readily applied to an ordinary window and capable of supporting a sash at the desired adjustment and of securely looking the sash in its closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sash-fastener of this character which when the sash is unlocked will permit the same to be raised freely and which willautomatically lock the sash in an elevated position when the same is released by the operator.
A further object of the invention is to enable the sash-fastener to automatically lock the sash when the latter is closed.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully-described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a portion of a window provided with a sash lock constructed in accordance with this invention, the sash being closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the sash being elevated. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the sash-lock. Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the sash-lock. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a portion of the ratchet-strip.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a base or supporting plate designed to be secured to a sash 2, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, and provided with countersunk perforations for the reception of screws or other suitable fastening devices 3 and having a hollow stud 5, of cylindrical form, arranged at its center for the reception of a sash supporting dog or pawl 6 and a sash-locking dog or pawl 7. The
cylindrical stud 5, which forms a pivot for the pawls or dogs 6 and 7, isinteriorly threaded for the reception ofascrew 8; but any other suitable means may be employed for forming the 'pivot for the pawls or dogs and any other" form of screw may be provided for retaining the pawls or dogs on the pivot-stud. The head of screw 8 extends beyond the stud, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and the pawls or-dogs are securely retained on the stud and are permitted to swing upward and downward.
The sash-supporting pawl 'ordog 6, which is provided with an aperture for the reception of the pivot, curves downward and outward from the pivot and is provided with an inwardly-extending weighted arm 9, which is adapted to throw the engaging portion of the pawl or dog outward against a ratchet-strip 10, which is secured to the window-frame adjacent to the sash. The ratchet-strip is provided at intervals with small apertures 11, adapted to receive the end of the sash-supporting dog or pawl, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, whereby the sash is held in an elevated position. As the sash is raised the pawl or dog 6 moves upward over the ratchet-strip and the weighted arm is adapted to throw it into any one of the openings or apertures 11. The movementof the sash-supporting pawl or dog is limited by a projection or stud 12, mounted on thelower portion of the plate and arranged between the engaging portion of the pawl or dog 6 and the weighted arm, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 40f the accompanyingdrawings.
The sash-locking pawl or dog 7 extends upward and outward atan inclination, and it is provided adjacent to its engaging end with a bulging or convex face 13, adapted to ride over the ratchet-strip without engaging the apertures or openings 11 when the sash is raised. The said pawl or dog 7 is provided at its inner or lower end with an opening for the reception of the pivot of the plate, and its inward movement is limited by a projection 14, located at the uppenportion of the base or supporting plate and adapt-ed to prevent the pawl ordog from being thrown backward or inward away from the ratchet-strip. The ratchet-strip is provided at its lower portion with a slot 15, adapted to receive the upper end of the pawl or dog 7, which has a squared engaging end or portion to interlock with the ratchet-strip at the top of the slot 15. The sash-supporting dog or pawl and the sashlocking dog or pawl are reduced at the pivot at their adjacent faces in order that their engaging ends may be arranged substantially in the same vertical plane for engaging the slots and openings of the ratchet-strip.
It will be seen that the sash-lock is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is strong and durable, and that it is adapted to be readily applied to an ordinary window. Furthermore, it will be clear that the pawls or dogs are automatic in their operation and that their arrangement is such that springs are unnecessary to hold them in their engaging position and to retain them in position for engaging the ratchet-strip. However, should it be desired, springs may be substituted for the weights of the pawls without departing from the spirit of the invention.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a ratchet-strip having apertures and provided with an enlarged opening, of means for engaging the apertures for supporting a sash in an elevated position, and the automatically-operatedlocking-pawl normally resting against the ratchet-strip and arranged to ride over the apertures without engaging the same and adapted to be dropped into the enlarged opening, whereby the sash is locked against upward movement, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a ratchet-strip provided with apertures and having a slot, a sash-supporting dog or pawl arranged at an inclination and extending downward and having a weighted arm adapted to throw it into engagement with the apertures, and the upwardlyeXtending inclined locking pawl or dog adapted to fit in the slot of the ratchet-strip and provided with a convex face forming a bulging portion arranged to ride over the apertures, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a ratchet-strip having apertures and provided with an enlarged slot or opening, of a sash-supporting pawl or device arranged to engage the apertures to hold the sash in an elevated position, and the sashlocking dog or pawl extending upward at an inclination and adapted to fit in the said slot and provided adjacent to its engaging end with an enlarged or projecting portion arranged to ride over the apertures to prevent the sash-locking pawl or dog from catching therein when the sash is raised, substantially as described.
In testimony that I'claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
