To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT BAUMGARTEN, a resident of Freeport, county of Stephenson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squeezers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to devices used for expressing the juice from lemons, limes, and the like, and designs to provide a squeezer which can be produced at a low cost which is simple in construction and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction hereinafter set forth, andmore particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a squeezer embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in central verticallongitudinal section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view, the parts being shown Fig. 4 is a detail plan of the dish and cone. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
The squeezer comprises two pivotally'connected frame members A and O.' Frame member A comprises a supporting-ring a, and integral standards or legs a, a and a ,whereby the ring is sustained in elevated position, so an ordinary tumbler or receptacle can be placed beneath to catch the expressed juice. The supporting-ring carries a removable dish and compressing member B, which comprises" a flange 19, adapted to rest on ring a, a spout 11', extended longitudinally from the dish and having holes b therein, wherethrough the expressed juice can escape to the receptaclebeneath the squeezer, and a cone I)", having a spiral groove 11 formed thereon.
The frame member 0 comprises a cup 0 which serves as the other compressingf'part,
and a levee-handle c. The pivotal connection-comprises two longitudinally-projectingears or lugs a and a integrally formed with the supporting-ring a, and each of said lugs has an elongated hearing or slotfotf therein and a pivot-stud c, which is projected lat erally from each side of and is integrally formed with a longitudinally-projecting arm of frame member 0. Said arm fits loosely between the bearing-lugs and has a slight lat eral play therebetween. Pivot o is held in slots a which are elongated to permit alongitudinal shift of the frame members, so the compressing partst'. 6., the cup and coneare free to relatively position each other during the vertical travel of the swinging member and the operation of the parts to express the juice and to relatively position each other according to the size and shape of the interposed lemon -section, or, in other words, are permitted free relative self-adjustment during the squeezing operation in a plane substantially perpendicular to the direction of application of the compressing force. Slots (1 are substantially parallel with their frame member A, and, together with the slight lateral play of the pivot-stud and arm, permit the cup and cone to position each other laterally during the operation of the parts to express the juice from a lemon, lime, or like article held in the squeezer'. That portion of the supporting-ring which is between the bearing-lugs is severed or cracked, as shown at of, so the lugs can be spread to permit the armand pivot-stud to be inserted to be placed, respectively, between and into 'the bearinglugs, The bearing-lugs are preferably inclined upwardly and toward each other, so the pivot-stud can be conveniently forced between the-lugs and into position to be securely held inslots a j I j The operation will be as follows: A lemonsection' is held between the cone and cup until the'frame members have been brought together to hold the lemon. will then be'depressed to express the juice from the lemon. During such shift of the members they will by reason of the loose pivotal connection be free to permit the cup laterally by each other and according to the size and shape of the lemon-section therebetween, and by reason of the loose pivotal con- The lever-handle and cone to be guided longitudinally and and arranged so that these can be integrally formed with the frame members and can be quickly assembled and interlocked, so they cannot be disconnected during the usual operation of the squeezer. The necessity of accuratelyfitting the partsis entirelyavoided, since the parts are loosely connected and are positioned during the squeezing operation by the compressing parts.
A further important resultant advantage of the invention is that the pivot and elongated slot permit a relative longitudinal shift, whereby the cup and cone will be positioned longitudinally by each other and the interposed lemon or other article. Furthermore, the play of the pivot in its bearings and the longitudinal arrangement of the slots permit a lateral play of the frame members, whereby the cup and cone will be relatively positioned by each other and the interposed lemon. Thus it will be seen that the pivotal connection is such as to permit a limited universal 't'. e., both lateral and longitudinal-relative shift of the members during operation, and so the cup will be positioned by the cone and interposed lemon, and therefore the lemon will always be evenly distributed around and between the compressing part, and the lemon will be evenly compressed. This advantage is an important one.
Manifestlytheinvention providesasqueezer for lemons, limes, and the like which is simple and inexpensive in construction, which is formed of few elements, and which is efficient in operation.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details shown and described, but may be varied by the skilled mechanic without departing from the spirit of the invention. So, also, the novel features may be employed severally without adoption in entirety.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fruit-squeezer comprising two compressing members movable relatively toward and from each other, and provided respectively with cup and cone, and connections between said compressing members for allowing longitudinal and lateral relative self-adjustment of said cup and cone during the squeezing operation in a plane substantially perpendicular to the direction of application of the compressing force.
2. A fruit-squeezer comprising two compressing members movable relatively toward and from each other, and provided respectively with a cup and cone, and pivotal connections between said compressing members for allowing longitudinal and lateral relative self-adjustment of said cup and cone during the squeezing operation in a plane substantially perpendicular to the direction of application of the compressing force.
3. A fruit-squeezer comprising two compressing members movable relatively toward and from each other, and provided respectively with a cup and cone, and pivotal connections comprising a pin and an elongated bearing between said compressing members for allowing longitudinally and laterally relative self-adjustment of said cup and cone during the squeezing operation in a plane substantially perpendicular to the direction of application of the compressing force.

A fruit-squeezer comprising two compressing members movable relatively toward and from each other, and provided respectively with a cup and cone, and pivotal connections comprising a pin and an elongated bearing between said compressing members for allowing longitudinally and laterally relative self-adjustment of said cup and cone during the squeezing operation in a plane substantially perpendicular to the direction of application of the compressing force, said bearing being substantially parallel with the compressing members when in closed position.
5. A fruit-squeezer comprising two compressing members movable relatively toward and from each other and provided respectively with a cup and cone, and pivotalconnections between said compressing members for allowing free relative self-adj ustment of said cup and cone during the squeezing operation in a plane substantially perpendicular to the direction of application of the compressing force, said connections comprising a pin and an elongated bearing, said pin having limited lateral play in said bearing.
6. In a squeezer, the combination of two pivotally-connecting members and a lemonsupporting dish sustained in one of said members, the latter member being provided with a circular ring to receive said dish and a pair of lugs extending longitudinally therefrom upon the side opposite the handle, the metal of the ring being severed to permit them to spring apart, and the other member being provided with a pivot-stud extending laterally from each side thereof, and fitted to said ears, whereby said pivot may be sprung between and into the cars by reason of the clasticity of said ring.
7. A squeezer, comprising a supportingdish, a supporting member therefor, having a dish-supporting ring, lugs upon one side of said ring, the material of the ring being separated between the lugs and a second memher having pivotstuds fitted in said ears whereby the elasticity of the ring is utilized in springing the members into pivotal connection.
