WILI-IELM MAYBACH, OF CANNSTADT, GERMANY.
MOTO R-VEHICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,436, dated July 1, 1902.
Application filed March 31, 1902.
subject of the Kingy of Wrtemberg, and a resident of Cannstadt, in lthe Kingdom of Wrtemberg, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is an exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in motor-vehicles, and more especially to an arrangement for sucking air through the cooling apparatus for the motor; andit'consists in the arrangementofan air-tight protectingbox around themotor, in the front wall of which box the water-cooler is situated, while in the back wallofV the same a ventilator is arranged, by meansof .which air is sucked into the protecting.- boxfof the `motor and pumped out-0f the box, together with the ex- 1 halations of the motor.
My invention is represented in the accompanying drawing, which shows a vertical longitudinal section through the motor and the protecting-box surroundingthe-same. It is known already to surround'the motor ofmotor-vehicles with a protecting-box, and it is also known to arrange a ventilator behind the cooling apparatus, which ventilator has the purpose of sucking a great quantity of air with great velocity through the cooling elements in case the velocity of the air produced by the speed of the vehicle is not sufcient for cooling the cooling-water. In all constructions, however, the air heated by passing through the cooling apparatus, as well as the exhalations of the motor andthe emanations of the lubricating-oil, leave the protecting-box through openings provided in the v side walls and in the doors of the protectingbox and in consequence thereof incommodate the people sitting in the carriage. According to :my invention this disadvantage is overcome by'pumping the hot air, together with the exhalations of the motor, out of the protecting-box surrounding thesame, so that this air leaves the box on the back wall of the same'underneath the chest of the carriage. The arrangement has, furthermore,
the advantage that the formation of a vacuum behind the motor-o'. e. behind the lower part of the same-and the whirling movement of the air caused by this vacuum, which move- Serial No. 100,746. (No model.)
ment causes a whirling up of the dust, is perfectly avoided.
In the drawing, a is the motor, surrounded 5 5 by the protectin g-box b. In the front wall of this box the well-known water-cooler c is arranged, while inthe back wall a ventilator d -is situated. This ventilator sucks fresh air the ventilatorisformed by arranging Vanes e von the circumference of the iiy-wheel of the motor. In case-the positionof these vanes isadjustedlso that in case the motor runs 7o with-'its'normal speed the velocity of the air leaving theEprotecting-boxl is equal to the speed of the carriage the ventilator'has only todo the Vwork necessary for sucking the air through thecooling apparatus, as this ventilator does not find any resistance in pumping the air out of the protecting-box.
I-Iavin g thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United Statesis 1. In motor-vehicles, the arrangement of a motor surrounded by a protecting-box, a water-cooler situated in the front wall of this b ox, and a- Ventilator situated underneath the chest of the carriage in the back wall of the protecting-box, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In motor-vehicles, the arrangement of a motor surrounded by a protecting-box, a water-cooler situated in the front wall of this 9o box, a y-wheel for the motor situated underneath the chest of the carriage in the back wall of the protecting-box, said y-wheel being provided with ventilator-vanes on its circumference, substantially as ,described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.-
WILHELM MAYBACH.
