Be it known that I, LoUIs RENAULT, engineer, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Billancourt, Department of Seine, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling Arrangements for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide motor-ears and like vehicles with improved means for cooling the engine and its connections.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a part of the improved features applied to an engine and its connections shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional rear end elevation of the same.
Similar characters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
According to the features of the invention the engine A and its connections are inclosed by a casing 2, which is open exclusively at the rear, as will be hereinafter specified, a space B being provided between the parts of the engine and the casing of such dimensions as to provide an air-chamber large enough to render the air entering such chamber effective. in the cooling operation. This arrangement of the casing brings the air directly into contact with the rear part of the engine and connections therefor and in contradistinction to those structures wherein the air passes between the walls of a double cover inclosingtheengine. Thefrontpart oftheengine is materially cooled by the casing, which is reduced in temperature when the vehicle is moving, particularly at a rapid speed, the cooling of this front part of the casing having a tendency to reduce the temperature of the air within the casing in advance of the engine, and consequently considerably reducing the temperature of the adjacent part of the engine. In addition to the air which passes into the casing the latter, being thin or constituting a reduced partition between the engine and its connections and the surrounding air, will also act as a cooling medium by the air impinging directly on the outer surface thereof. The rear part of the upper portion of the casing terminates contigiiously front part of a cooling device 1, which has open ends, as indicated clearly by Fig. 2, through which the air can enter, and after passing through the cooling device continues into the casing over the engine and its connections. Against the rear side of the cooling device 1 deflecting-plates 3 are arranged to cause the air to pass equally through the part of the cooling device engaged or covered by the easing 2, the velocity with which the air enters at theopposite ends of the cooling device and passes into the casing being proportionate to the speed of the vehicle and the rarefaction of the air produced in the casing 2 inclosing the engine and its connections by the suction created by a fan on the fly-wheel 4: of the engine located below the said cooling device. This fan is rotatable within the part 5 of the casing in which it is located and operates to draw the air from the upper part of the easing downwardly toward the same and fully around the engine. The said fan is provided with helical vanes arranged around the flywheel and comprising inner parts 6 and outer parts 7, the parts 7 projecting over the periphery of the fly-wheel and the parts 610- cated nearest the axis of the latter. The parts 6 of the vanes nearest to the axis of the fan act centrifugally to draw the air through the casing and expel it toward the periphery of the fan, and the parts 7 of the vanes farthest from said axis operate to expel the air backward lengthwise or parallel to the floor of the vehicle. The cooling device 1 is located at the rear of the casing, as hereinbefore set forth, and projects beyond the two sides of said casing. The air, during the motion of the vehicle, passes through the projecting ends of the cooling device and is sent back by the wall 3 behind the cooling device and passes through the latter into the casing and escapes through the fan without passing around the cylinders of the engine. As the casing is well closed and as the air which passes through the cooling device strikes on a wall before passing into the casing and does not circulate in the casing, but goes directly from the cooling device to the fan, the dust that may be drawn inwardly into the casing does not lodge in the latter, but is immediately drawn out by the fan. The cooling medium contained in the cooling device 1 is maintained at a low temperature by the-air passing through said cooling device, and the latter serves to cool the engine.
The improved construction will be highly efficient for the purpose for which it has been devised, and changes in the proportions and dimensions may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a cooling apparatus for motor-cars and like vehicles, the combination with an engine and its connections, of a casing surrounding the engine, a cooling device with which the upper part of the casing connects and having open extremities, deflecting-plates behind the cooling device for causing the air to pass through a part of said device covered by the casing, and a fan below the cooling device for drawing the air from the casin 2. In a cooling apparatus for motor-cars and like vehicles, the combination with an engine and its connections, of a casing surrounding the engine and consisting of a single wall closed at the front and open at the rear, a jacketed water-cooler with which the rear open portion of the casing cooperates, the said cooler having means for deflecting the air into the casing, and a fan below the cooler and carried by a part of the engine to draw the air downwardly and discharge it rearwardly with respect to the casing and engine.
