NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN J. WVADE, OF IOWA CITY, IOYVA.
RECEPTACLE FOR CONTAINING PAPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708, dated June 1902- A Application filed December 3. 1901. Serial No. 84,548. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN .I. WVADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iowa City, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Containing Papers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a receptacle such as an envelop or pocket or any similar device for containing legal or other papers, which may be suspended within view and convenient reach of the person requiring access thereto and when no longer required for use may be filed away in a pigeonhole of a desk or other piece of oflice furniture.
The invention consists in a receptacle having a flap and adapted for containing papers and provided with removable hangers, substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a receptacle in the form of an envelop and provided with hangers at its ends. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the flap of the envelop raised; Fig. 8, a perspective View illustrating the application of my invention to a rack or other support.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a receptacle for containing legal or other papers where access is required thereto, said receptacle being in the form of the ordinary envelop, of paper or other suitable material, as the material from which the receptacle is constructed does not enter into the invention but usually a thick and heavy paper is used, similar to the iile-envelops used in lawyers or other offices. The receptacle A is provided with suitable hangers B, which project laterally from the ends of the receptacle a suflicient distance to engage with suitable supports for the purpose of suspending the receptacle therefrom.
In Fig. 3 I have shown two rack-bars E to better illustrate the application of my invention thereto, and it will be seen that the receptacles may be conveniently reached and removed from the rack-bars or supports F and replaced when through with, the name of the person or case being placed on each receptacle, so that when suspended, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the name of the person or case will appear to the view. The
supports F, which may be of any suitable' receptacles with relation to each other, as
shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, by the use of the supports arranged one above the other will bring the lettering on each receptacle to view at all times, thereby greatly facilitating the finding of any one of the receptacles required.
The hangers consist of a wire rod 0, of any suitable thickness, connected to the receptacle A in any suitable manner, but removable, so that after the receptacle, with contents, is no longer required for use the rod may be withdrawn from the receptacle, so that it will not be in the way when filing the receptacle in a desk or other piece of office-furniture.
Although any suitable means may be employed for detachably connecting the rod 0 to the receptacle, what is considered the most simple is cutting slits in the receptacle to form bearings D, so that the rod may be connected thereto, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This rod is of sufficient length to project beyond the ends of the receptacle to form the desired hangers required to suspend the receptacle from the rack or other support.
As a means of suspending the receptacles for convenient access it is the purpose to provide a suitable rack, either inclosed in a case or without a case or placed against the wall or other stationary object, the side bars of the rack being far enough apart so that the receptacles will hang between them and permitting the hangers to be suspended by the notches or projections which form the supports in the side bars, the receptacles to hang down and the notches or projections to be far enough apart so that the position of the receptacles with relation to each other will be such as to expose to View the name or other inscription upon each one of the suspended receptacles, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, each one of the receptacles capable of being Withdrawn from the rack without disturbing the other or theone next to it.
Having now fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A receptacle for containing papers comprising a pocket closed on three of its sides and having a flap for closing the pocket-opening and arod removably connected to the receptacle between the pocket and flap and projecting at its ends beyond the sides of the pocket to form hangers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Areceptacle for containing papers closed on three of its sides to form a pocket for loosely receiving and holding the papers and having slits to form bearing, and a rod supported in the bearings and its ends projecting laterally from the sides of the receptacle to form hangers by which said receptacle may be suspended from a suitable support, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN J. WADE.
