SOFA-BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 702,959, dated June 24, 1902.

Application filed October 25, 1901. Serial No. 79,920. (No model.)

To ctZi whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERBERT G. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is the production of a sofa-bed embodying the improvements hereinafter shown and described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section through a couch embodyingthe features ofmyinvention,showing the parts in their relative positions to form a sofa. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the back partially lowered to form a bed and the other parts in their corresponding positions. Fig. 3 is a view similar to that of the preceding figure, showing the last or final position of the back, also showing the seat lowered on a level with it and the drawer in its outward position. Fig. 4c is a longitudinal vertical section on dotted line at of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on dotted line 5 5 of Fig. 4., the seat and the drawer being removed.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

In the embodiment herein shown of this invention I employ a supporting-frame A, composed of the end members A and A the upright members A the rear brace A", and the cross-piece A Between the rear brace A and the cross-piece A, I secure the drawerguides A, and to the inner side of the members A and A and extending between the rear brace A and a supporting-block A fixed to each of the end members A and A are the rails A grooved, as at A, to guide the rollers that carry the seat.

The back B has a link connection with the supporting-frame A by means of the two links B, each pivoted to one of the upright members A at B and to one side of the back B at B A roller B at each of the lower rear corners of the back B is adapted to run in the groove A of the rail A to support said back during the process of lowering it, as will more fully appear hereinafter.

At each of the lower rear corners of the seat 0, I provide a roller adapted to run upon the rail A The back and the seat are pivotally connected by a, mechanism which will now be described. 7

To each side of the back B, adjacent to the seat- (J, a member D isrigidly secured, a similar member D also being fixed to each side of the seat C, adjacent to'the back B. The members D and D at each side of the sofabed are pivotally united by the rivet D Upon a stud D on the member D is pivoted a locking-bar Dfladapted to slide within the keeper D of the member 'D. A fixed stud D on the member D is adapted to engage a notch D in said locking-bar D when the seat and the back are in certain relative positions, and when the seat and the back occupy certain other positions the point D of a gravitypawl D mounted upon a stud D on the member D, will engage the teeth D of the locking-bar D hen the locking-bar lies with its notch D in engagement with the fixed stud B the back B. and the seat O are locked from outwardmovement upon their connecting hinge-joint.

The drawer E is supported upon the guides A and is provided at each of its forward lower corners with the caster E, adapted to support the front end of said drawer when the latter is extended. Upon a supporting-block E secured to each side of the drawer, near the rear thereof, is pivotally mounted a connectinglink E the other end of. said link being pivotally connected with the link B, intermediate the ends of the latter.

To lower the backB from the position it is shown to occupy in Fig. l, the seat O is drawn slightly forward and raised to a vertical position. This movement withdraws the support of the stud D from the back B, which latter descends by gravity, while at the same time the link connection between said back and the frame and the pivotal connection between the back and the seat cause said seat and said back to move forward upon the rails A By reason of its link connection with the back B the drawer E will also be projected forward upon its guides A The seat may now be lowered from its vertical position by moving the Fupper end of said seat slightly backward, which movement withdraws the stud D from the notch D of the locking-bar D and permits the gravity-pawl D to engage one of the teeth D of said locking-bar. A

forward movement of the upper end of the seat will now cause the gravity-pawl to raise the free end of the locking-bar to a height which permits said bar to slide over the stud D without being engaged by said stud, when the seat may be lowered to the position it is represented as occupying in Fig. 3. Then it is desirable to raise the back B to an upright position, the forward end of the seat 0 is raised until the locking-bar D is drawn rearward in the keeper D a sufficient distance to permit the fixed stud D to enter the notch D in said locking-bar. Upon returning the seat to its normal position the back B will be raised and the drawer E will be slid inward upon the guides A. Free access may be had to the interior of the drawer by raising the seat. I

When the parts are in the position indicated in Fig. 1, the back must first be tilted slightly forward to release the engagement of the locking-bar D It is clear that slight changes may be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts of my invention without departing from its spirit and scope. Therefore I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details shown and described or to the exact arrange ment of parts herein set forth.

I claim as my invention 1. In a sofa-bed, in combination, a supporting-frame composed of two end members, two upright members, a rear brace, and a crosspiece; a back having a link for connecting it with each of said upright members; a seat having a pivotal connection with said back; a rail on each of said end members for supporting said seat; and a drawer having a link connection with the link supporting said ack.

2. In a sofa-bed, in combination, asupporting-frame composed of two end members, two upright members, a rear brace, and a crosspiece; a back having two links, one for connecting it with each of said upright members; a seat having a pivotal connection with said back; means for releasably locking said seat and said back at an angle with each other; a rail on each of said end members for supporting said seat; and a drawer having a link connection with each of the links for su pporting said back.

3. In a sofa-bed, in combination, a supporting-frame; a back having a link for connecting it with said frame; a seat; a hinge-joint between the seat and the back; a stud fixed to one member of said hinge-joint, said member also having a pawl pivoted thereon; and a locking-bar pivoted to the other member of said hinge-joint, and adapted to engage said fixed stud, and having a tooth adapted to engage said pawl.

4. In a sofa-bed, in combination, a supporting-frame composed of two end members, two upright members, a rear brace, and a crosspiece; a back having two links, one for connecting it with each of said upright members; a seat; a hinge-joint between the seat and the back; a stud fixed to one member of said hinge-joint, said member also having a pawl pivoted thereon; and a locking-bar pivoted to the other member of said hinge-joint,adapted to engaged said fixed stud, and having a tooth adapted to engage said pawl.

5. In a sofa-bed, in combination, a supporting-frame composed of two end members, two upright members, a rear brace, and a crosspiece; a back having two links, one for connecting it with each of said upright members; a seat; a hinge-joint between the seat and the back; a stud fixed to one member of said hinge-joint, said member also having a pawl pivoted thereon; a locking-bar pivoted to the other member of said hinge-joint, adapted to; engage said fixed stud, and having a tooth adapted to engage said pawl; a drawer; and a link connection between the drawer and each of the links for the back for projecting said drawer.

6. In a sofa-bed, in combination, a supporting-frame composed of two end members, two upright members, a rear brace, and a crosspiece; a back having two links, one for connecting it with each of said upright members; a seat; a hinge-joint between the seat and the back; astud fixed to one member of said hinge-joint, said member also having a pawl pivoted thereon; a locking-bar pivoted to the other member of said hinge-joint, adapted to I00 engage said fixed stud, and having a tooth adapted to engage said pawl, a rail on each of said end members for supporting said seat; a drawer having a link connection with each of the links for said back; and guides in said :05 frame for said drawer.
