A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Y WALTER R. BOWEN, or SANFRANGISOO, CALIFORNIA. I
SOAP CAKE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 702,531, dated June 17, 190 2 Applioation filedAugust 27, 1901. Serial No. 73,444. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER R. BOWEN, a
city and county of San Francisco, Stateof Oalifornia, have invented certain new andusefrom such foreign mWvould pick up, while at the same time the said guardplate acts as a drain,""so to s k pea, for the ing to add to the attrapti onessnfihe soap by having one side of the cake of soap, provided with a metallic or composltionplate, which plate may be ornamented in any suitable manner.
To comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, whereim- Figure l is a side view in elevation, partly broken, illustrating the guard attached to the soap. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view partly broken, and Fig. 3 is a detail side sectional View of the plate with the inner plate detached. 4
In the drawings ithe letter A is used to indicate the guard-plate, which may be constructed of metal or other suitable material.
This plate is made concaved or dish-shaped, audto same is attached the cake'ofsoap A. Preferably the soap is run into the plate during the manufacture thereof or while in I a plastic condition. Any suitable means may be employed for holding the plate tothe soap; but I prefer to form the plate with an inwardly-turned flange or edge a,which bites, so to speak, into the soap after the same has cooled or become hard.
Ofttimes it is desirable that the soap be permitted to float. This may be accomplished by forming an air-space between the soap and bottom of the guard. For this purpose a'plate B is arranged within the guard-plate, so as to rest aslight distance from the bottom thereof When 7 thesoap'is run into the guard-plate, the air in orderto provide an air-chamber a.
retained within said chamber will form an aircushion, which will give sufficient buoyancy to enable the cake of soap to float when placed in the Water.
If desired, the outer face of the guard-plate may be used as an advertising-space, or same may be suitably ornamented. If so desired, the monogram of the owner may be out therein, thus enabling the cake of soap to be readily designated.
Inasmuch as the cake of soap after use is placed so as to rest upon the guard-plate, all
drip of the soap will readily run 0E and not accumulate around the edge thereof. By
means of the guard-plate the soap is kept free of dirt or foreign matter.
Having-thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be protected by Letters Patent, is-
l. A cake of soap provided with a dished metallic plate having a flanged edge embedded in the material of the soap, said plate cooperating with the cake of soap to form an airchamber therebetween, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A cake of soap provided with a guard- WALTER E..BowEN.
