WILLIAM J. K'EENEY, OF FLGRENGE, INDIANA. i Leners Patent No. 70,225, and 0mm 29, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PITMAN-GOUPLING.
\ @tige Signale nfemh n in ilgese tters zrtrut mit making pnt nf tlge time;
TO WI'IOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known that I WILLIAM J. KEENEY of `Florence Switzerland count Indiana, have invented a new and useful Pitman-Coupling; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication.
My invention relates io a form of pitman-joint or coupling, which is susceptible of beingr sct up-as it wears, and which is also capable of ready shipment and unshipment.
|- The device, although applicable to a great variety of macl for the coupling of a harvester-sickle with its pitman.
Figure 1 represents my coupling shipped or connected for use.
Figure Qreprescnts the same in its unshipped or disconnected condition.
The shank A of my sickle-bar has a spur or heel, B, of square or rhombic form transversely; a diagonal ofv said square or rhomb being coincident with the plane of motion, and curved upward and backward l in a' circular arc. My pitman-rod Ojterminates in`two jaws D E, having a'tightcning-screw, F, and gains d c formed to 'rit and grasp the heel B. G is a block,`ot` India rubber or soft Wood, which co-acts with the nut and screw F to hold the jaws to any specific adjustment. It is apparent that however long the machine may be in use the jaws D E may he made-to grasp the heel B with a uniform pressure on every side, and yet permit a free vibration in the common plane of the pitlnan and sickle-.borg also that the sickle may, when desired,4 be instantaneously unshipped from the pitrnan, (see iig. 2.)
While selecting for illustration the preferredform or type of my improvement, I reserve the right to vary the same; for example, the recurved heel may have an oval, circular, triangular, or other transverse section, and a wedge or key may take the place of the-nntland screw F.v The form, however, ofthe said heel, under my present improvement, must be such as to enable the two jaws to he closed snugly upon it in every direction.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- 1. A pitman-coupling, composed of the reeurved heel B and adjustablejaws i grasp said heel with a uniform pressure on every side, tially as set forth.
2. In the described combination, the reeurved heel B the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.

lines, is more especially designed and intended ongitudinally DE, which can be .adapted to with their described or equivalent accessories, substanjaws D E, screw-nut F, and block or spring G, for
