To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. MILLEA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at No. 36 Keith street, Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shut-Off Devices for Motors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon;
The object of my invention is to provide adevice by which a steam-engine or other mo v tor may have the source of supply or energy quickly cut off, so as to check its motion, and:- a device which may be operated from a poin t' remote from the motor. U
My object is furtherto provide a mec'han ism by which while the primary motive power for driving the motor is'steam and the pressure of steam is employedto operate the shutoff mechanism, yetthe force acting directly upon the shut-off mechanism may be derived from air or gas or a liquid other than steam.
My object is further to provide mechanism having the advantages herein set forth.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the construction herein shown.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 shows azportion of the ordinary type of Corliss engine with so much of my device in operative connection therewith as is required to clearly explain the construction Fig. 2 is a detached view of a spring device to be substituted for the fluid device, if desired. Fig. 3 is a view of my improved packing-ring.

For a mechanism to operate the shut-off rods n I prefer to employ a shut-0E cylin- Lder provided with a piston and piston-rod and a'suitable conduit extending to the cylinder, entering the same at .a point below the piston. A reservoir r is arranged at some convenient point, having an outlet-conduit s and an inlet-conduit u, the latter extending to the source of steam-supply or being connected with the steam-supply pipe at some convenient point. The reservoir r is filled or substantially filled with water, the result of condensation. An electrically-operative valve device a is arranged inthe conduit leading from the reservoir to the shut off cyI- inder. Suitable electric conductors extend from said Valve device to various stations or points in the building, as desired, and a source of electrical energy is provided, so that when contact is made the circuit is completed. The electrically-operating valve d evice is operated and the valve thereby opened, allowing the water. to How from the reservoir to the shut-off cylinder, being forced thereto by the pressure of steam operating through the inlet-conduit u, resulting in forcing the piston iriflthe. shut-0H cylinder upwardly, and thereby operating upon the grab-hooks throughthe shut-off rods n. ,One' suchstation or point above referred to is represented by the push-button z, from. which the conductors or wires y extend to the battery :1; and the electric device a. Anynumber of these push-buttons or other suitable circuit-closers may be employed for operating my device from a distance. While I prefer this mechanism or form of construction, it will readily be seen that a spring may be employed in the cylinder and the electrically-operated mechanism be arranged to set the spring free instead of to open a valve to bring about the same result or effect.
In Fig. 2 I show a spring-provided piston in the cylinder which is adapted to be released when the electrically-operating mechanism is energized for the purpose of operating the rods, which throw the grab-hooks out of engagement in the manner hereinbefore described.
As a packing for the piston-head I employ a cup-shaped flexible piece, preferably of rubber, formed as shown in Fig. 3. With this form of packing the pressure in the cylinder under the cup tends to force it outwardly against the Wall of the cylinder, and thus pack the same tightly; but when the pressure is removed the cup contracts slightly and the piston will move with the utmost freedom.
Having therefore described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of an engine of the Corliss type, with cams 7; arranged to throw out the grab-hooks, rods extending from the cams to a device adapted to force said rods upwardly, an electrically-operated mechanism arranged to cause the rod-forcing device to act, suitable electrical conductors, one or more stations or switches, and a source of electrical energy, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of an engine provided with grab-hooks and cut-out cams adapted to throw said grab-hooks out of engagement, with a shut-011' cylinder having a piston and piston-rod operatively connected with said cut-out cams, a conduit leading to a source of pressure, and an electrically-operated valve in said conduit, substantially as shown.
3. The combination of a reservoir, with a motor, shut-off mechanism comprising grabhooks and cut-out cams adapted to throw said grab-hooks out of engagement, in operative connection with a cylinder and a piston therein, a conduit from said reservoir to said cylinder, a valve in said conduit, means to op erate said valve, and a conduit from a source of pressure as steam, air, gas, or water, to the reservoir, substantially as shown.
4. The combination of a source of pressuresupply, with a reservoir, a conduit between the two, a cylinder havinga piston and a piston-rod, a conduit from said reservoir to said cylinder, an electrically-controlled Valve in the last-mentioned conduit, grab-hooks for a motor, cut-out cams adaptedto throw said grab-hooks out of engagement, and rod connections between said cut-out cams and said piston-rod, substantially as shown.
