UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

KETTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iietters Patent No. 702,055, dated-June 10, 1902.
Application filed March 17, 1902. Serial No. 98,602. I (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUKE GILLERAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kettles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tea-kettles and other devices in which water is boiled; and it has for its general object to provide in a tea-kettle or analogous device means whereby the kettle or other device may be readily filled with water while held in the hand without liability of the hand being scalded by steam from the kettle.
With the foregoing in mind the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunctionlwith the accompanying drawings, in
which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tea-kettle constituting one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2, an enlarged detail section taken in the plane indicated by the broken line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a detail inverted plan of the valve forming part of my improvements and its appurtenances.
Similar letters of reference designate cor" responding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
- The kettle preferably comprises the usual body A, spout B, cover 0, and handle D and is peculiar in that it has an openingE of a shape and size to snuglyreceive'the mouth of an ordinary kitchen-faucet and a valve F for normally closing said opening. I prefer to form the opening E in .the body A and to connect the valve to said body A; also, to dispose the opening in the upper portion of the body at the point shownt'. e., at one side of the handle and at an opposite point with reference to the spout B.
The valve F is pivoted on a pin a within the kettleand is shaped in conformity to the wall of the kettle-bod y. The pin ais mounted in eyes I) at the ends of aholder G, which, in addition to the eyes, is provided with a loop 0 and is connected to the wall of the kettle-body by a bolt d, passed through said loop and wall and equipped with a nut e.
H is a spring which has for its purpose to close the valve subsequent to the disengagement of the kettle from a faucet and normally keep the valve closed. Said spring is coiled about the pin a and has an arm f disposed below the valveF and another arm 9 disposed below the wall of the body. v
By virtue of the construction described it will be observed that the valve F will normally be held against the inner side of the wall of the kettle-body, and;h'ence will normally close the opening E; also, that when the kettle is held up toa faucet, so that the discharge end of the faucet enters the opening E, the valve will be o'pened,as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, by the faucet and water permitted to freely pass from the faucet into the kettle. The occupation of the open* ing E, by the discharge portion of'the faucet and the prompt closing of the opening by the spring-pressed valve F as the kettle is disengaged from the faucet will obviously prevent steam escaping from the kettle and scalding I the hand which grasps the handle D, which is an important desideratum.
that my improvementsarevery simple and are susceptible of ready application to kettles at present in .use, as well as embodiment in new kettles; also,' that the improvements render it unnecessaryto set a hot kettle in a wet sink and remove the" cover incident to filling the kettle with water,'. which is the practice'now in vogue and objectionable for obvious reasons.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
.The combination of a kettle having an opening of a size to snugly receive the discharge portion of a faucet; the'holder Gr provided with the eyes I) and-loop c and arrangedwitllin the kettle, a bolt extending through said loop 0 of the holder and a wall ofthe kettle and fixing the holder in position, a pin arranged in the eyes of the holder, a valve piv oted on the pin and arranged to close the said opening, and a spring coiled on the 'ping'and having one arm bearing againstthe. kettle and another arm bearing against the inner side of the valve.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LUKE GILLERAN.
