UNITED :'FSTATES PATENT OFFICE. l
HENRY E. KENT, o'ENEw BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY] TOP FOR TOOTH-POWDER BOTTLES OR cANs OR OTHER CONTAINERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,893, dated June 10, 1902.
i Application'led March 6, 1902. Serial No. 96,974. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it mag/ficoncernf Be it known that I, HENRY'BKENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at'New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex'and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops forfTooth-Powder Bottles or Cans or other Containers; and I do declare the following tobe aV full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improved tops or Stoppers for tooth-powder bottles and cans and other forms of containers with which thetop or stopper may be employed, and is designed as an improvement upon Letters Patent No. 690,7 37 granted to me as the assignor to Consolidated. Fruit .I ar Company, by providing a simple and positive means for preventing the unscrewing or accidental removal n of the cap from the neck portion. f Y
The invention consists in certain novel fea -tures of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appendedclaim@ In the accompanyiiig drawings, Figure lis aside elevation of av top'orstopper designed for use with agtooth-powder bottle. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. Bis a plan view of a top or stopper designed for use with a tooth-powder can or other container, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the same.
Referring to Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, l denotes the neck of the stopper, provided with a discharge-orifice 2 and having at its lower edge a laterally projecting annular ange 3, which is adapted to be crimped around the edge of an annular flange 4 of a tubular shank portion 5, which carries a cork packing 6." TheY neck vportion is provided with screw-threads to a point near its upper en d, where itis formed with a lateral swell, bulge, or shoulder'7. Y. y l 8 denotes vthecap, which is providedvwith screw-threads 9 to engage the threads of the neck and is formed with a lateral bulge 10 at its upper end, which is' of greater length than the bulge 7, whereby the screw-cap may be rotated and guided vertically by its threaded' connection with the neck to expose and Y close the opening in the neck. It is of course understood that the screw-cap is-engaged withl the neck before the /tool is inserted into the neck from "belowand the bulge?" formed in said neck. Afterthis bulge has been formed it will be impossible to remove the cap.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 I have provided the tubular shank with a flar- 6o ing-body whichis adaptedtobesecured in any 'suitable manner around the upperend of the 1 can or other container. The other features illustrated are similar to those illustrated in Figs. `1 and 2 and are correspondingly num- 65 bered, and the description of the constructionv shown in Figs. 1 and 2 will answer for that shown inV Figs. 3 and 4.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,l 7o
Various changes inthe form, proportion,
and details of constructionl may be made within the'scope of theinvention without departing from the spiritfor sacrificing any of the advantages thereof. v
Having thus described my invention, what 8o 'I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is'i-, t. In-a bottle or can top, the combination with a neck portion formed with a discharge-aperture and, for a portion of its length, with S5 screw-threads and at its end with a lateral lbulge or shoulder, of a screw-threaded cap .engaged with said neck portion and formed at its upper end with a bulge to receive that of the neck and of greater length than that .9o
of the neck to permit of the vertical movement of said cap in screwing it to close and expose -the discharge-opening, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I havehereuntset my hand in presence of `two subscribing witnesses. v. HENRY E. KENT; e Witnesses:
