Be itknown that I,JOHN HARVEY MCBRIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- peka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to copy-holders; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be folded com pactly together or partially unfolded, so as to form an inclined surface designed to hold a copy in position for use, the holder being also provided with a receptacle open at both ends and at one side and in which the copies are secured at one end by means of 'apivot-pin or eyelet passing therethrough and on which the copies are adapted to turn.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompa nying drawings form a part,in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a backview of my improved copy-holder unfolded, one end thereof being partially broken away; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section 011 the line2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a front view of the copy-holder in position for use; Fig. 4, a cross-section on the line 44 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 a similar section showing the copy-holder folded together as when not in use.

In the practice of myinvention I provide a copy holder or case consisting of a folder formed from a sheet 7 of relatively stiff material adapted to be folded longitudinally,

and for this purpose I may employ card board, leather, paper, and canvas, or any other suit-" able material. r

The dimensions of the sheet 7, are preferably about eight by nine and one-half; but said sheet may be of any desired dimensions, and in practice I fold the same longitudinally at a predetermined distance from one edge thereof, as shown at 8, so as to form a longitudinal receptacle 9 open at both ends and atone side, as shownIat 10, and in which the copies 11 placed. The copies 11 are secured in place by an eyelet or rivet 12, passed through one end of said receptacle or the front and back side walls thereof, the back wall of said receptacle being designated by the reference character 13 and the front wall by the reference character 14. The sheet 7 is also folded at 15 to form a flap 16, and this flap 16 is folded at 17 to form a supplemental flap 18. The supplemental flap is provided centrally of its free edge with a transverse slot or opening 19, at the inner end of which is secured an eyelet 20,'with the outer end of which is connected aconcavo-convex disk 21, and secured to the front wall 14 of the receptacle 9 is a spring-clip 22, and passed through separate holes 23 at the fold 15 of the sheet 7 is a double cord 24, which is also passed through front and back holes 25, formed in the sheet 7 at or adjacent to the fold 8. The ends of the cord 24 are connected at 26, and the folded end thereof is tied at 27 to form a loop 28.

The copies 11 are secured in the receptacle 9, as shown in the drawings, by means of the pivot-eyelet 20, and said copies are adapted to be turned on said pivot, and whenever it is desired touse one of the copies the said copy is turned outwardly throu'gh the open side 10 of the receptacle 9 and then folded over the front wall 14 of said receptacle, as shown in F i g. 3, and the edge thereof is placed under the spring-clip 22. The said receptacle and the flaps 16and 18 are then held in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the end 26 of the double cord 24 is drawn out and passed through the slot or opening 19 in the supplemental flap 18 and passed around beneath the disk 21, as shown in Fig. 4. This holds the separate partsof the device in the position shown in Fig. 4 and forms an inclined surface or support for the copy, as shownin Figs. 3 and 4, and the holder, with the copy in position thereon, as shown in Fig. 3, may be placed on a desk, table, or other article of furniture at which the child or scholar sits, and whenever the writing exercise is finished the copy is released from the spring-clipj22, turned backwardly,and folded into the receptacle 9. The end 26 of the cord 24 is then detached from the disk 21 and the looped end 28 of said cord is pulled out and the parts of the holder are folded together,

as shown in Fig. 5, and said looped end of said cord is passed around the disk 21, so as to secure the parts of the holder in the folded position.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that my improved copy holderor case comprises a four-part folder consisting of a sheet of suitable material folded to form four leaves or flaps, two of which are united at one edge to form a receptacle for the copies, one side of which is adapted to be held in an inclined position and to serve as a display-surface for the copy or copies.

This device is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive and may be carried in the pocket or in a satchel or other receptacle and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended and to retain the copies in proper shape and protect the same from injury at all times, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

Acopyholderorcase,comprisingafolder folded longitudinally into four separate leaves or parts which are integrally connected, two of said leaves or parts being connected at one edge to form a copy-receptacle, and means whereby the receptacle is held in an inclined position by the other two parts of the folder to serve as a display-surface, substantially as shown and described.

2. A copy holder or case comprising a sheet folded longitudinally into four separate parts or leaves which are flexibly connected and two of which are connected to form a copy-receptacle, and means whereby the receptacle is held in an inclined position by the other'two parts of the folder, so as to serve as a displaysurface, and a plurality of copies secured in one end of said'receptacle bya pivot-pin, substantially as shown and described.

A copy-holder consisting of a four-leaf folder, two adjacent leaves or parts of which are united to form a receptacle open at one side and at both ends, and means for holding one side of said receptacle in an inclined position by the other two parts of the folder, and a plurality of copies secured by a pivotpin in one end of said receptacle, one of the side walls of said receptacle being also provided with a spring-clip.

A copy holder or case comprising a folder two leaves of which are connected at one edge to form a receptacle open at both ends and at one side, said folder being also provided with a main and a supplemental flap the supplemental flap being provided with a transverse slot in one edge thereof, a disk secured at the inner end of said slot, a double cord passed through the closed side of said receptacle and through the fold of the flap at the open side thereof, and a spring-clip secured to the back of said receptacle adjacent to the open side thereof, said receptacle being also provided with a plurality of copies secured byapivot atone end thereof, and adapted to be turned outwardly through the open side thereof, substantially as shown and described.
