EGG BEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,432, dated June 3, 1902. Application filed August 9, 1901. Serial No. 71,541. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELISHA L. WEED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baker City, in the county of Baker and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Egg-Beaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that kind of egg-heaters which comprise a cyl- IO inder provided at or adjacent to its lower end with small openings and a piston arranged in the cylinder and adapted when reciprocated to draw and force eggs through the said openings, and thereby break and mix the eggs.
It consists in a certain specific construction the novelty, utility, and advantages of which will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in

In said drawings similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views, referring to which- A is the cylinder of my improved heater, and B is the piston, arranged and adapted to move in the cylinder and provided with the usual rod a and handle I). The cylinder is preferably of metal and is equipped at its upper end with a cap 0, which is removable to facilitate cleaning of the cylinder and piston and is provided with the usual aperture d for the passage of the piston-rod and also with the usual air-vent e. At the lower end of said cylinder is a base 0. This base is made up of an approximately horizontal portion f, which is joined to and extends outwardly from the cylinder and has an upwardly, outwardly, and downwardly extending flange f at its outer edge and a skirt portion g, se-

To the under side of the outwardly-extending portionf of the base is brazed or otherwise connected a foraminated diaphragm 2', which is disposed below the lower end of the cylinderand is designed, in conjunction with the notches 7b, to break and thoroughly mix eggs when the same are drawn and forced therethrough.
In the practical operation of the beater the cylinder is held in a bowl containing eggs, with its base resting on the bottom of the bowl, and the piston is rapidly reciprocated. When this is done, the eggs will be alternately drawn and forced through the notches in the base and the perforations of the diaphragm, and in consequence will be very quickly broken and thoroughly mixed. It will also be observed that on the downstroke of the piston the eggs after being forciblydischarged from the cylinder through the f0- raminated. diaphragm will pass laterally through the notches in the base, and consequently will not be liable to spill from the bowl.
In addition to being extremely cheap and susceptible of being quickly and easily cleaned my improved egg-beater is advantageous because the broad base 0 lessens the liability of it slipping from side to side while it is being operated in a bowl or the like and also because said base covers or rests over a considerable portion of the eggs in the bowl, with the'result that a large quantity of eggs will be drawn and forced through the perforated diaphragm incident to the up and down strokes of the piston and the thorough. breaking and mixing of the eggs accelerated.
While designed more particularly for beating eggs, it is obvious that my improved device may be used to advantage in beating cream and other substance.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The herein-described egg-beater consisting essentially of the cylinder, the broad base made up of the approximately horizontal portion f joined to and extendingoutwardly from the lower end of the cylinder, and having the upwardly, outwardly and downwardly extending flange f at its outer edge; said flange being disposed at right angle to the portion f, and the vertical skirt portion secured atits upper edge in the fiangef of portionf and depending from said portion f and having 5 notches in its lower edge; said fiangef serving to connect the outer edge of the portion f and the upper edge of the skirt portion 9 and lend rigidity and strength to the base as a whole, the foraminated diaphragm connected to the base portion f, and the piston mov- IO able in the cylinder.
