JACOB M1LLER,. or CARROL'LTON, OHIO. Letters Patent No. 70,103, dated October 22, 1867.
IMPROVBD (lAR-GOUPLIlilG.
T0 ALL WIIOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Beit known that I, JACOB MILLER, of Carrollton, in the county .of Carroll, and State of Ohio, have made new and useful-.improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, sufficient to enable others skilled in thear't to which my invention appertains to understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specificai fion,"A and in which- Figures -1 and 2 are sectional side elevations of my improved coupling device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inthe two gures.
My invention relates to an improvement on a coupling device for which I have made application fer Letters Patent already, and consists in the use of a spring-tumbler, whichvalways rests on the coupling-link, and keeps' the latter in a horizontal position, and over the projection or hook 'ivhen the coupling is eiected.
A in the drawing may represent the draw-head cfa car, provided 4with an internal chamber to hold the coupling devices, which consist of the stationary hook 'orlbat'ch B, projecting backward and upward from the bottom of the draw-head, the tumbler C, pivoted at c, `and acted upon by the plunger D, which is forced downward by the spring-within the cylinder or oasin'gD, and the cheek-pieces C and pin e', which is pivoted at d,- `and operated by the lcverE. The coupling-linkF in this case may be the one commonly used. When the same is introduced into the mouth of the -draw-head A, and passes over the inclined plane of the catch B, it raises at the same time the pivoted tumbler C, and, as soon as it has passed in sufficiently for the loop to pass over the rear point of the catch B, it falls downward, and rests on the pin e,`the tumbler G pressing doivn onl it, keeping it in a horizontal position, and preventing its passing over the catch B.
To withdraw the link F fromthe draw-head, the lever E is moved forward, and the link F is thereby raised above the catch B. The same movement raises the tumbler C, resting on the link F, While the latter is lifted to a suilicient height to allow itto'pass out clear of the catch B.
The movable frame G, operated byntheispring-plunger H, is precisely the same as described in my previous application, and needs no further descr-iption.4
Having thus described myiiiivention, what I claim as new therein., and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y. I v y 1.v In the above-described couplingdevice,"thc pivoted tumbler C, acting independently from the cheekpiecesC, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
l 2. The combination of the pivotcd tumbler C, spring-plunger D, cheek-pieces C', provided with leverE and pin e and the movable frame G, acted upon by the spring-plunger II, substantially as and for the purposes described,
JACOB 'MILLER Witnesses:
