SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,016, dated May 27, 1902.

Be it known that I, JOHN LLEWELLYN DA- VIES, a subject of' the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at l1 I-Iorsell road, Ronalds Road, Highbury, London, England, have invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in or Connected with Arc-Lamps, (for which I have made application for patent in Great Britain onihe 1st of November, 1900, No. 19,595;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention for improvements in or connected with arc-lamps relates to an improved framework for` the lamp, to an improved means for attaching` the regulating-coils to the framework of the lamp, to an improved means for counterbalancing the cores of the regulating-coils, and to improved means for holding the inclosing globe and reiiector, and to an improved means for connecting the brake-mechanism dash-pot and regulating mechanism.
In the accompanying sheets of' illustrative drawings, Figure I is an elevation of an inclosed arc-lamp constructed accordin g to this invention, and Fig. 2 is an inverted sectional plan showing the regulating-solenoids and their connecting mechanism, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan of the lower part of the lamp. Fig. l is a detailview of the vibration-spring of the lamp.
The framework of the lamp comprises the top or crown plate a, the coil-plate b, hung from the crown-plate a by side rods b', a main or central tube c, held in the coil-plate Z), the cover-plate d of the regulating-mechanism chamber fixed on the lower end of the central tube c, and the globe or cylinder-cap e, hung from the cover-plate d by side rods e'.
The regulating-coils Z m are inserted between the coil-plate b and the crown a and are forced against insulating flanged nipples a', fixed on the crown-plate a by nuts b2, screwing on the lower ends of the side rods b and bearing against the coil-plate b, the side rods being insulated from the coil-plate.
On top of the main tube c is a cap c3, having a bracket or arm c', supporting the axis gf of a double pulley g, having fixed in its larger diameter a flexible cord h, connected to the upper-carbon holder h, and on its smaller diameter a flexible cord h2, connected to a weight h3, sliding on a guide-rod 7b4, fixed between the bracket or arm c3 and the coverplate d.
The cores Z m of the regulating-coils Z m are connected to opposite ends of the lever n, fulcrumed on a screw-stud c5, fixed in a bracket-ring c-, vfixed on the central tube e, the cores being connected in alternate-current lamps to the lever by coil or spiral springs Z2 for taking up the vibration. The dash-pot cylinder o is pivoted to the lever ln. and has a ball-valve o at its top. The piston o2 of the dash-pot is connected byits rod o3 to the cover-plate d. Y
The regulating mechanism consists of a disk p, guided on rods p, fixed in the globeplate e and having a central hole, through which the carbon passes. One edge of the disk is connected to the lever n by the link n', and there is a small counterweight n2 on the opposite edge, that normally rests on a stop on the globe-plate e.
The lower-carbon side rods r are suspended and insulated from horizontal screws 0*',screwing into the globe-plate c, and are connected at the bottom by a bridge r2, supporting a hollow tail-screw s, in which is a sliding plunger S, forced upward by a helical spring s2,
bearing on a set-screw s3 in the bottom of the tail-screw. The plunger s bears against the under side of the lower-,carbon holder t, that also serves to support the globe ef.
An ornamental ring u' is fitted to the bottom of the case r, fixed at its upper end to the crown-plate a, and the reiiectorfo3 is fixed to the ring by buttons Q24, screwing into the ring.
The current passes to the positive terminal -l-, fixed in the coil-plate b, through the scries coil Z', to a terminal f on the cover-plate d', thence by a flexible connection (Z2 to the globe side rods r, lower-carbon holder t, carbons, upper-carbon holder h, flexible cord 71,-' to the negative terminal on the coil-plate.
The shunt-coil fm is connected directly across the positive and negativo termih nalsb IOO /Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The improved means of supporting the regulating-solenoids consisting,` of a crownplate, insulating-nipples fixed on the crownplate, a coil-plate, side rods insulated from the coil-plate, and forcing the coil-plate toward the crown-plate, coils inserted between the plate and over the nipples on the crownplate substantially as described.
2. The combination with a grip device controlling the feed or descent of the upper carbon, of means for counterbalaneing the upper-carbon holder, consisting,` of a double pu lley, two flexible cords fixed to the double pulley, the upper-carbon holder and the guided counterweight fixed to the cords substantially as described.
3. The means of suspending the lower-carbon holder and globe consisting of a fixed horizontal plate, insulated side rods pivoted by horizontal pivots to the horizontal plate, a bridge connecting the lower ends of the side rods, a rail-screw screwing' in the bridge, a spring-plunger in the bridge, and the carbonholder and globe-support resting on the plu nger substantially as described.

The dash -pot arrangement for arclamps, consisting,` of the controlling-lever, the dash-pot cylinder, links connecting the cylinder to the controlling-lever, the lamp-frame, the dash-pot piston pivoted to the frame, and a ball-valve on the top of the dasl1-pot cylinder substantially as described.
G. The lamp-casingconsistingof the crownplate, a cylindrical easing fixed at its top to the crown-plate, an L-ring fixed to the bottom of the casing, a reflector and removable screwbottom for fixing the reflector to the ring substantially as described.
