IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE.
To ALL Wei-0M4 Ir MAYcoNoERN: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN E. LAYTQN, of New Wilmington, in the county of' Lawrence, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a` new and 'useful Improvement in,P ost-and-Rail `llenceg and Il do hereby declare that the following .is a. full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to lthe lettersof reference marked thereon'.
'The nature of my invention consists in providing thc posts of the ordinary rail fence" with supports, which are so` arranged with relation. to the posts and rails that the weight of the rails is brought to bear-on the support `in such manner that the weight of the rails will beardoyrnwards in' a straight line midway between Vthe posts, thereby causing the posts to press towards each other in proportion to the weight of the rails.
My invention further consists in securing the posts to a base-piece by means of mortise and keys; the whole being constructed'and operating in the manner hereinafter described.
u To enable others skilled in the art of constructing fence to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction 'and operation. In the accompanying drawings'which' form part of'my specification- Figure 1 is a side'elevationof-my improved post-and-rail fence.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same. c
In the drawings, 'A and B represent theposts, which are provided with a mortise in each, marked 0. The posts are secured to the base, which consists ot'- two pieces marked C andvC, by means of keys 1 and 2f On the sides of the posts A and B are secured in an oblique position to the longitudinal plane of4 the posts the supports e and ,upon which rest the rails marked 3. The supports e are secured to the post A, and the sup ports z' are secured to the post B. The base-pieces C and C rest on blocks or stones marked rv.
The manner of'co'nstructing my improved fence will readily be-'seen and understood by the skillful mechanic by reference to the accompanying drawings, and the relation that the several parts bear to each other will also be understood without further description. The skillful mechanic will also see that by my mode of constructing la post-and-railfence, -the 'size and form of the several parts maybe varied to suit the'judgrnent and taste of the constructor, and'that p. cheap, durable, and iirmpost-and-rail fence can be constructed on the plan herein described and represented.
Having thus described the nature', construction', and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention, is i The posts A andfB, provided with supports e and i' for the rails 3, said posts being secured to the base 'C C by means of keys 1 and 2, the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described and for the purpose set forth.
