HARRY S. LORD, OF BATH, MAINE.
SMOKE AND CINDER CONVEYER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,955, dated May 27, 1902.
Application filed March 7, 1901. Serial No. 50,180. (No model.)
ed for use upon locomotives for conveying the smoke, sparks, and cinders from the smokestack; and the object of my invention is the provision of a conveyor which can be applied to any form of engine and train at a compara tively reasonable cost and which will be thoroughly efficient and practical for the intended purpose.
To attain the desired object, my inventionconsists of a smoke, spark, and cinder conveyor embodying novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a complete train provided with my conveyer. Fig. 2 represents a detail view,on an enlarged scale, of the damper or regulator, the smoke-stack, and a portion of one of the sections of pipe. Fig. 3 represents a detail View of a form of pipe-sections employing funnels to direct the wind into the conveyer. are detail views of the sections of the conveyer and connections.
In the drawings,A designates a train of cars, in connection with which I employ my improved conveyer, and communicating with the smoke-stack B is the series of sections of pipe 0, which form the conveyor and which are supported above the train by'brackets D, and each section is connected'b'y a flexible connection to allow for the motion of the train, said connections comprising each the two flexible bands or tubes E, the end fastening collars or rings F, and the central clamp, composed of the two flanged collars G, the clamping-rings G, and theflexible tubes are provided on the inner surface with coil-springs H, which serve to hold the tubes Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 open and also reinforce said tubes and prevent tearing.
The smoke-stack is provided at its front with the open plate J, which serves as an airinlet, and above said air-inlet is a pivoted damper K,which will entirely close the smokestack and throw allthe airinto the conveyor through the perforated plate or can be tilted to allow the stack to remain open, as desired, and to one side of the damper is connected a weighted lever L and to the opposite side of the damper is connected a crank M, from which leads a cord to the" locomotive-cab, where it is provided with a handle N to enable the engineertooperate the damper.
If desired, 1 may provide'the sections of the conveyer with the funnels O for directing the airinto the sections, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing description and drawings it is evident that I provide a conveyor which will take the smoke, spark, or cinders as they enter the smoke stack and convey them backward over'thetrain and discharge them away from said train, and thus entirely overcome the serious defect and objection now existing, which'allows the smoke, sparks, and cinders to enter the train to the great discomfort of passengers.
I claim- 1. The conveyenherein shown and described consisting of the smoke-stack, the section of pipe leading from the smoke-stack, the funnel connected to the section for drawing in air, and the series of sections connected to the main section by a flexible connection, comprising the flexible tubes, the bands connecting the outer ends'of the tubes to the conveyor-sections, the rings which move the inner ends of the flexible tubes having the flanges bolted together, the bands which secure the inner ends of the tubes to the flanged rings, and the coils arranged in the flexible tubes and retained in place by the flanged rings and the ends of the conveyor.
2. The combination of a smokeestack provided at its front with an opening and an open plate, a pivoted damper'mounted within the stackabove said openingand plate, a lever extending from one si'de of said damper and carrying a weight, a crank extending In testimony whereof I affix my signature from the opposite side and having bearing in the stack, said crank and lever being bent in opposite directions, and a connection attached 5 to said crank and leading to the cab, all substantially as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
in presence of two witnesses.
