OTTO S. KLINDWORTH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GILBERT RUSTIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BREEDING-PEN FOR SOWSJ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,949, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed January 11, 1902. Serial No. 89 277. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, OTTO S. KLINDwoRTH, a citizen of the United States, residingin the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breeding-Pens for Sows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a pen adapted for use in confining sows and young at and immediately succeeding breeding time.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved pen. Fig. II is a horizontal sectional view taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a vertical sectional View taken on line III III, Fig. 11.
l designates the inside wall, and 2 the outside wall, of the pen, the walls being circular in shape and being preferably composed of slats or boards that may be slightly separated from each other, as shown, or may be closely assembled. The walls 1 and 2 are separated from each other a desirable distance to provide a chamber 3 between them, that may contain a filling 4 of straw, hay, or other material that excludes the entrance of wind from the interior of the pen and adds warmth to the inclosure. Between the walls at their upper ends is a separating-ring 5, to which the walls are attached. Between the walls at the lower end of the wall 1, which extends from an elevation above the ground, is a separating-ring 6. The outer wall 2 rests upon the ground, as seen in Fig. III, and the inner wall 1 extends from an elevation above the ground, providing a runway 7 beneath the lower separating-ring 6 to be occupied by the young pigs.
8 is a platform centrally positioned on the ground within the pen and above which the runway 7 extends, this platform being adapted to be occupied by the sow, while the young pigs may move within the runway at will and without danger of injury by being trans pied upon or crushed by the sow, that occu- 5o pies the platform, confined therein within the inner wall of the pen and cannot enter the surrounding runway. I
9 is a door composed of portions of the inner and outer walls of the pen and adapted to be opened to permit the entrance of the sow onto the platform 8 and to be closed and secured to confine her therein. This door is preferably hinged at 10 to the outer wall 2 and provided with a catch 11.
12 is a roof surmounting the pen. This roof may be of the form shown or may be of any other desirable construction.
I claim as my invention- 1. Ina pen of the class described, the combination of an outer wall, an inner Wall concentric with said outer Wall and extending from a greater elevation than the outer wall to provide an overhung circular runway, and a platform centrally located within the lower end of said outer wall, substantially as described.
2. In a pen of the class described, the combination of an outer wall, an inner wall concentric with said outer wall and extending from a greater elevation than said outer wall and separated from said outer wall to provide a chamber between them, and a platform centrally positioned within the lower end of said outer wallto provide a circular runway between said outer wall and said platform, substantially as described.
3. In a pen of the class described, the combination of an outer Wall, an inner wall extending from a greater elevation than the lower end of said outer wall, upper and lower separating-rings between said walls, whereby said walls are spaced to provide a chamber adapted to contain a filling material, and a platform centrally located within the lower 0 end of said outer wall, and between which and said outer wall a runway is provided, substantially as described.
OTTO S. KLINDWORTH.
