Description

(N0 Modell) MKBLLY, PUISDN PEEDING DEVICE. n NQ. 503,268. 'Patented Aug. 15, 189s.
fm1/wch www j@ Mg@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL KELLY. OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
POISON-FEEDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,268, dated August 15, 1893.
Application tiled March 29,1893. Serial No. 468,169. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New York and State oi New York, have invented a certain new and useful Feeding Device, of which the following is a specification.
The device is a masked trough designed to be used with poisoned food or water for the destruction of vermin, as rats, mice and sparrows. It provides for easy access of the creatures for which it is intended, and forbids the access of larger beasts or birds. The form also prevents the larger creatures from seeing the contents.
The accompanying drawings torni a part of this specification and represent what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention.
Figure l isa generalperspective View. Fig. 2 1s an end view, and Fig. 3 a front View of the two ends, partially in vertical section. The remainin ggures represent modifications. Fig. Li is a plan view showing the device in an annular form. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 in Fig. 4e. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing an oblong form. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7"? in Fig. G. Fig. 8 isa corresponding section showing a modified form of the head. Fig. 9 is an end view corresponding to Fig. 8.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views where they appear.
A is a board of pine or other suitable man teral, adapted to lie on the ground or iioor, and to form a reliable support.
B is a sheet of zinc or other metal, curled as shown, so as to bring the edges approximately together, one edge B overhanging or standing considerably farther outward than the other.
C C are pieces of wood or metal secured just within the ends so as to sustain the sheet metal and constitute therewith a strong and tight case. Y
D D are nails or screws inserted through holes in the sheet metal exterior to the ends C, and securing it in the desired position, on the foot A.
The device should be so adjusted that the part B' overhangs at a proper height, al-
lowing sufcient space under it for the desired animals or birds to move in and out while forbidding the access of larger animals or birds. v
The device may be made ot various sizes for dilierent uses. I have in my experiments made the device thirty (30) inches long, and the main portion two (2) inches radius, allowing the part B to overhang or extend two inches farther. rIhis device, so iixed on a board as to leave an open space of about two inches in height under the mask, will serve for rats, mice, and the belligerent and destructive sparrows.
The ends C O are each formed with a wing C adapted to support and properly stiften the overhang B of the sheet metal. The main portion of the opposite edge ofthe sheet metal is marked B2, and is folded so as to form a smooth edge over which the smallanimais and birds which it is desired to destroy can easily reach to obtain the food within. The edge is left higher adjacent to each end, as indicated by B3. This higher portion ex tends up to the level of the edge B', and serves to prevent the larger animals or birds from seeing the food, and as a guard to prevent any from reaching inward by any possibility except by crawling under the low over-hung edge B or the wings C at the ends.
Modifications may be made without departing from the principle or sacriiicing the advantages of the invention. Instead of sheet metal for the part B, and separate pieces of wood for the ends() C, the whole may be made of cast iron molded thin. In such case the foot may be formed integral therewith. I can use various materials. Wood may serve.
I propose as a modification which may have some advantages, to make the whole of cast iron, or crockery, and instead of making the device straight, curving it so that it shall form an endless ring with the over-hang on the outside. Figsa and 5 show such amoditiGatiOn. Other modifications may be made by forming it in a semi-ring, or in two straight parts joined with an angle-V-shaped. With either of these forms, which will be obvious without drawings, it will lie on a tloor or on the ground reliably, without feet.
Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 show modifications made IOC in stout sheet metal and in the form of a trough with a hood suiciently larger held at a proper height and overhanging on all sides. Fig. 7 shows the hood with a hanging lip. Fig. 8 shows the hood Without such lip. In both forms the hood overhangs so as to forbid the access of the larger creatures, and so as to prevent their seeing the food or water therein. For convenience in lling and cleaning, the hood in each of these latter forms, is made separate and tted upon posts and secured by removable keys.
The device may be placed Where the pests frequent. It should be exposed out of doors only in the country Where the sparrows are objectionable, but for rats and mice Wherever they are found.
I claim as my invention- 1. The feeding device herein described cornprising a trough of irnperforate material and arranged to serve substantially as herein speciiied.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
MICHAEL KELLY.
