BED-BOTTOM.
srnclnroarrolv forming part of Letters Pateneivo. 700,929, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed April 4, 1901. Serial No. 54,270. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN I'IOEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bed-bottoms of that class in which a wovenwire or equivalent support for theupper mattress is attached to a framework, which framework is supported upon the bedstead.
lWIy invention consists of the parts and the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l is a plan of my invention looking from below. Fig. 2 is an end view.
y A represents the side rails of a mattressframe of my improved construction.
B represents the end rails, and 2 is the wire mattress, which is stretched between the end rails, as shown. The end rails are made of such length that when the side rails lie between the bedstead-rails these end rails project over the upper edges of the bedsteadrails.
Between the side and end rails are fixed the blocks Ll. These blocks lie parallel with the end rails, having their outer ends extending outwardly and flush with the ends of the end rails. The side and end rails and these intermediate blocks are then strongly secured together by bolts, and the ends of the blocks will rest upon the edges of the side rails of the bedstead, and thus raise the end rails and the wire mattress to a sufficient height so that while the edges of the Wire mattress may be flush with the outer sides of the bedstead-rails they cannot be depressed sufficiently to strike those rails. This construction provides a cheap economical bedbottom and enables me to use the short pieces of lumber for the intervening blocks, which would otherwise be wasted.
If desired, an ornamental cap-piece of thin sheet metal may be applied to the ends of the blocks and end rails, upon which may be stamped the name of the bed or other ornamental matter.
In order to further stiften the woven-wire mattress and prevent its being depressed centrally or so as to strike the bedstead-rails, I extend elastic cables G from end to end beneath the mattress. At points approximately central between the ends these cables are connected together by links 8, which are so disposed as to' draw the central portions of the cables transversely toward each other.
-The cables are so disposed that the two adjacent cables of the first and second pair when drawn into position overlap each other, so as to form one or more elongated diamond-I shaped spaces. The second cable of the second pair in like manner overlaps the first cable of the third pair, and so on from one side to the other of the mattress, each overlapping pair forming elongated diamondshaped spaces'between and each pair having its own independenttension produced by the links 8. The ends of the elongated diamonds are formed by the crossing of the pairs of cables intermediate between the center and the ends of the bed-bottom, as shown at 9. These intermediate crossing lines form a spiral support foi-.those portions of the wovenwire fabric which are intermediate between the center and the ends. The central portion is sufciently supported bythe pairs of cables drawn together, as described, and by intermediate links extending across the minor diameters of the diamond-shaped spaces, so as to unite all the pairs, as shown at l0, and cause them to act unison. It will be understood that a plurality of crossings of these pairs of cables maybe made, so that as many supplemental supports for the woven-Wire fabric can be made as may be desired, the effect being to strengthen the bottom and enable it'to more evenly resist any pressure brought upon its surface. The links may be shortened by further bending the ends which engage the cables or by turnbuckles or equivalent adjusting devices, so as to increase the tension of the cables, `if found` necessary by reason of their stretching.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a bed-bottom of a frame consisting of end bars extending over the side rails of the bedstead, supportingblocks resting upon the bedstead-rails having the outer ends Hush with those of the end IOO bars, side bars bolted through the inner ends of the blocks and the end bars and suspended therefrom interior to the bedstead-rails, a Woven-Wire fabric stretched longitudinally over the end bars and unconnected With the side bars, said fabric having its edges flush with the end bars and overhanging the bedstead-rails, strengthening devices consisting of elastic cables extending in pairs between the ends of the frame, links by Which the members of each of said pairs are drawn toward eachl other, said pairs being so disposed that adjacent members of each pair overlap each other and cross to form supplemental supports intermediate between the center and the ends. v
2. The combination in a bed-bottom of a frame, the end bars of which extend and are supported above the bedstead-rails by blocks interposedandrestingupon said rails, side bars of said frame bolted through the inner ends of the blocks to the end bars and supported therefrom out of contact with the bedsteadrails, a Woven-Wire mattress stretched over the end bars having its edges projecting flush with the end bars and over the bedstead-rails, elastic cables stretched between the end bars in contact With the lower surface of the mattress, links by which the central portions of each of the pairs of cables are drawn toward each other whereby the adjacent members of each pair overlap in the form of elongated diamond shapes, and other links extending across the shorter diameters of the overlapping members and approximately in line with the links by which the tension of each pair is maintained.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN HoEY.
