LESTER VAN ORMAN, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BED-SPRING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1907.
Application filed August 1906. Serial No. 330,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESTER VAN ORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsboro, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bed springs, and has for its object to provide a device of this nature which will not sag in the middle or incline to one side when a person is occupying one side of the bed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for adjusting the device to sustain people oi different weights.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the invention. Fig. ,2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one end of one of the end rails of the spring. I
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes the side rails of a bed spring, and 6 end rail supporting members, which are located one at each endet the side rails 5 and comprise each a plate having a slot 7 formed therein through which is engaged a bolt 8, carried by the related side rail 5. A nut 9 is engaged with each bolt 8 and serves to support the said plates upon the side rails for adjusting movement longitudinally thereof.
.Iournaled for rocking movement in the members 6, at each end of the spring, is a rod 9, which forms a part of the end rails of the spring. The plates comprising the end rail supporting members are turned slightly laterally at their ends adjacent the ends of the side rails 5 and thence in spaced relation to the side rails, as at l0, and secured to each end of the rods 9/ and located between the portions l0 of each plate and the corresponding side rail is 'a head plate Il,
Connecting the corresponding head plates ll at their upper and lower ends, respectively, are rods l2 and I3, and secured at its ends to the rods l2, at each end of the bed spring, is a woven wire spring 14 of any desired construction.
Rods l5 are located adjacent each end of the bed spring, and are secured at their ends to the side rails thereof, and connecting each of the rods l5 and the adjacent rods 13 of the end rails is a series of helical springs I6, which normally hold the woven wire springat a tension.
In order that the tension of the springs 16 may be adjusted when desired, a lug 17 is formed upon each side rail 5, adjacent the inner end of each end railsupporting member, and engaged through each lug is an adjusting screw 18, which impinges against the adjacent end of the said member, the plate comprising the member being bent at its said end, as at 19, at right angles for this purpose.
From the above it is obvious that, regardless of the location of the occupant of the bed therein, the end rails will be rocked to maintain the bed in a level position.
What is claimed, is:
1. A device of the class described comprising side rails, brackets adjustably carried by the said rails, means whereby the brackets may be adjusted longitudinally of the rails, said brackets being turned to form portions lying in spaced parallel relation to the rails upon which they are arranged, end rails comprising heads and rods connecting the heads, the intermediate rod at each end rail being journaled in the last mentioned portion of the corresponding brackets with each head of the end rail located between the said portion of the adjacent bracket and the adjacent portion of the side rail, one of said rods being arranged above the intermediate rod or axis of the end rail and the other below the axis, bed spring fabric connecting the rods above the axis, and means connected with the rods for normally moving the upper rods of the two end rails of the device away from each other to stretch the fabric.
2. A device of the class described comprisingl side rails. brackets adjustably carried by the side railsy end rails journaled for rocking movement in the brackets and iucluding portions lyingl above and below the axis of the end rails, hed spring fabric stretched from the upper portion of one of the end rails to the upper portion of the other end rail, yieldable means connected with the lower portions of the end rails to normally hold the bed spring fabric in stretched position, and means for adjusting the brackets to vary the action of the said yieldable means.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
LESTER VAN ORMAN.
Witnesses DANIEL J. MCKENNA, JOHN ONEILL.
