RICHARD WILLIAM DERBYSHIRE', OF DAGENHAM, ENGLAND.
TIDAL MOTOR.
sraorrroncrron forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,408, dated May 20, 1902. Application filed March 10, 1902. Serial No 97,466- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD WILLIAM DER- BYSHIRE, engineer, a subject of the King of GreatB ritain and Ireland, and a resident of the Cross Keys, Dagenham, in the county of Es has been filed but-not yet sealed,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the utilization of a tidal rise or fall and the current of water-flow incidental thereto for operating a dynamo-.
' electrical lamps, and for like purposes.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have appended the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- V Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the gen-, eral device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof, also sectional. Fig. 3 is an elevation of part of the outer ring, showing the means adopted for varying the angle of the buckets. Fig. 4 is anend sectional elevation thereof; and Fig. 5 is a view of. the outer ring, showing the screwed lug in place within the slot.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In carrying my invention into effect I employ a moored raftor barge with either swimheaded or tapered ends, which is placed in' a tideway and has a central channel B, suitably shaped to provide for the rotation of the undershot O by the Water-current set up by the tide. The buckets b may be set to any angle within their range by a slotted ring D on one side and a guide-ringD on the other side, these rings being joined by cross-bars E, passing from-D to D under the periphery F of the wheel 0 and between the arms thereof, so that both rings may move simultaneously. annular flange F on the inner side of the periphery F of wheelC, and so maintain the rings D D in a concentric position on the wheel 0. Each bucket b is freely bedded in the periphery F, between a pair of angle-strips F on said periphery, and attached by free pivots or pins 0 to the rings D D,
. gates temporarily during adjustment.
The cross-bars E slidably bear on the which form the sides of the wheel. 'A head H, similar tothe puppet-head of a lathe, is attached to D andhas a screw J, which engages with -a screwed hole in the lug K, which is attached to and projects from the periphery F, upon which the buckets b are freely swung. A hand-wheel I controls the screw J, and when it is desired to reverse the angle of the buckets b or to regulate said angle the hand-wheel I is turned in either direction, so as to move the slotted ring D and the opposite ring D relatively to the periphery F. Said regulation or reversal is effected by stopping the wheel 0 by a sluice gate or Since the apparatus is carried upon a floating raft or split barge, the immersion is always equal.
I prefer to couple the wheel 0 thus driven directlyto one or more dynamo-electric generators MM and either ballast the barge orv current derived directly.
I may use two, three, or more wheels C inthe parallel space between the flotation por tions'of the raft, barge, or the like and may grade them so that each may take up the Having now particularly described and as- I raft with accumulators in circuit or use the certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. In a device of the character described, a wheel, rings carried by the wheel and adjustable thereon, and buckets mounted in the a wheel and rings.
2. In a device of the character described, a wheel,.a ring carried by the Wheel andadjustable thereon,-and buckets pivoted in the ring and loosely seated on the wheel.
3. In a device of the character described, a wheel, rings adjustable thereon, buckets pivoted in the rings and angle-strips on the pe-. I
riphery of the wheel between which the ends of the buckets are loosely held.
4.. In a. device of the character described, a wheel having a fiat periphery with an annu- IOU lar flange on its inner side,- a ring on each side of the periphery, cross-bars connecting the rings and slidably bearing on the flange, buckets pivoted to the rings and loosely seated on the periphery of the wheel, and In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my means for adjusting the rings on the Wheel. hand in presence of two witnesses.
5. In a tidal motor, a raft or divided barge, n y an undel'shot Wheel mounted thereon, bnck- MOHARD WILLIAM DLRMSHIRL' 5 ets carried by the Wheel and means for silVitnesses:
multaneously altering the incline of all of PERCY E. MATTOCKS,
