@nimh IMPROVEMENT IN ROOI'ING-FABRI.
dlgs tlgttult' nimmt ttf-in tiges: Etnias tant aut 'making part uf tttttme.
To ALL WHOM ir MAY ooNoERN;
Be it known that I7 JOHN SCANIAN, of Chicago, inthe countyo'f Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Felt'vRootmg; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I wili proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid, drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a. plan or top v iew of my invention as arranged in strips upon the roof, and
Figure 2 is a section oi` one of said strips, showing the different layers composing the.$21111,nd their arrangement with heb other i Similar letters of reference in the different iigures of the drawings'deno'te the same parts of my invention.
A represents di`erent layers of the rooting as arranged upon a roof; the material being manufactured in strips of any desired length, and applied as shown, extending across the root' in a. manner corresponding with the arrangement of the layers of shingles upon a shingleid root'. Each layer or strip of the rooting is composed of three layers or thicknesses of felt, or its equivalent., prepared in the manner hereinafter described. The lower stratum consists of dry felt a, which is designed to lie upon the roof-boards, and is used in e dry state, to prevent its adhering to the boards, as, in case of adhesion, there would be great danger of injuring the roofing by the shrinking otV the roof-boards, which would crack it and cause it to leak. The nextstratum b is composed of felt which 4has been thoroughly saturated in coal tar, or its equivalent, and afterwards coated with or passed through a. melted'watcr-proof composition. Upon this is'arranged another layer of felt, saturated with coal tar, und these three layers, being substantially of the same width, are arranged as shown with lrespect to each other, so as to form' a thin edgeto the strip for convenience in overlapping one strip upon another. The three layers are then passed through between suitable pressingrollers, or other pressing apparatus, which press the whole compactly and firmly together, forming rolls of any desired width -or lerfgth ready for transportation.
This rooting can be applied readily by any one, arranging the layers as shown and specified, and securing them to the roof in any suitable manner. The ordinary gravel coat may be applied upon this roofing after being laid upon `the roof, if desired. Y
Having described the construction of my invention, and the manner of applying the same, I will now specify what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
I claim, as a. new article of manufacture, rooting'composed ot' two layers of saturated felt and one layer of dry fait, arranged as and for the purposes specified.
