Beit known that I, J Aeon- CHRISTIAN HAN- sEN-ELLEHAMMER, mechanical engineer, of Istedgade 99,`Cpenhagen, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented certain Improve. mentsin Cigarette-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention refers to improvements in cigarette-machines, and specially to the device for filling the cigarette-tubes with tobacco. The tilling is effected by screwing into the properly-compressed and divided-off tobacco cylinder orrrod a thin screw-shaped wire, then by means of this wire in known manner introducing the tobacco-cylinder into the paper tube, and finally unscrewin g the said wire from the completed cigarette. The screwing into the tobacco-cylinder is done by Y turning the wire around its axis and simultaneously'displace it axially at such a speed that for each revolution the wire is moved axially through a distance equal to the pitch of the screw-line. If this combined movement be adjusted in a suitable manner, the Wire may be introduced even in finely-cut tobacco without in any way damaging the tobacco-cylinder. v
The apparatus for filling the cigarette tubes or Wrappers is by Way of an example il1us the ycylindrical chamber formed between the closed molds b and c, upon which spout the cigarette tube o r wrapper that has to be filled may be pushed'.
In the base-plate a is arranged a slot f, parallel with the axis of the cylindrical chamber bet-weenthe molds h c, in which slot a slide g may be moved forward and backward by means of the lever h, provided with a handle Serial No. 63,544. (No model.)
'i'. The slide g is provided with two bearings Z, in which a cylinder m, having a screwshaped groeven, is turnably mounted. In the cylinder 'm is inserted a rod 0, carrying the thin screw-shaped wire 1J, having the same pitch as the groove n. The mold e is a iixture, while the mold bis arranged to move forward and backward between the guide-rails 1, fixed to the base-plate. On the lower side of the mold ZJ is xed a pin 2, projecting through the base-plate into a slot 3, -arranged in one end ofalever 5, placed underneath the baseplate ct and capable of moving on a stud 4, fixed to the base-plate. The lever 5 is further provided with a slot 6, in which may slide a pin 7, fixed to the main lever 7L, that is arranged to turn on the gndgeon 8, fixed to the baseplate. The middle portion of the slot 6 has the shape of an arch of a circle,witha radius equal to the distance between the stud 'Zand the gudgeon 8, and the extremities of the slot are curved on arcs eccentric to the middie portion of said slot. When moving the lever 7i only the short distance fr om the position shown in Fig. '1 to the one shown in full lines in Fig. 7, the pin 7 will move in the eci h only be moved so much to the left that the point of the screw-shaped Wire 19 is standing justin front of the pressing-molds. During the further movement to the left of the lever h the molds will remain closed, as the pin 7 is then moving in the portion of the slot 6 that forms an arch of a circle, with the pin 8 as a center. As already mentioned, the eX- tremity of the slot 6 is curved into abrupt eccentric relation to the middle portion and arranged so that during the'last part of the movement to the left of the leverlz, and when the tobacco mass has "to be pushed out ot' the cylindrical chamber formed between the molds the mold b 'is moved slightly apart from the mold cin order to take away the pressure from the tobacco. Vhen the lever his again moved to the right, the pin 7 gets into the arch-shaped portion of the slot 6 andthe molds will then assume and remain in the closed position shown in Fig. 7 until the pin gets into the last eccentric portion of the. slot,
when the lever will turn and the mold b move away from the mold c. The hearings l of the slide g are on one side provided with brackets Z', having slots in which a sliding bar q may move to and fro, the sliding bar (l being furnished with a pin o', projectinginto the groove n. The arms s and t are arranged in such a manner that the prolongation w of the pin r, turning away from the cylinder m, will strike against tite ends of arms s and if above the projections u and fr when the slide gis moved forward and backward. The bearings] are further provided with two hooks :c and y, which, when the bearings through the movements of the slide g pass the arms s and t, will strike against the projections u and fr and press these so far away from the slidebar q that the pin w gets clear of the arms s or t.
The working of the apparatus is as follows: lVhen after the paper tube c having been pushed ontothespoutd thehandleis brought from the position shown in Fig. l to the left, the slide g will also be moved to the left and the molds b c sim ultaneously pressed together. The slide-bar q is pushed along, together with the slide g, and the cylinder m will follow the movement without turning until the pin w bears against the end of the arm t. When this takes place, the slide-bar q will be prevented from moving any fart-her, and as the pin r, projecting into the groove n of the cylinder m, is now stationary, while the slide g, with the cylinder m, is moving on, this latter, besides the movement forward, will be forced to turn. This combined forward and turning movement of the cylinder m begins when the point of the wire p reaches the extremity of the tobacco-cylinder between the molds b c, and the wire will consequently screw itself into the tobacco-cylinder as long as the cylinder m is turned. The moment the hook 1/ reaches Athe projection t this one will be pushed away from the slide-bar q, and the pin tu may now pass clear of the arm t. The turning of the cylinder m ceases, and as the wire p is now screwed completely into the tobacco-cylinder this cylinder may be inserted into the cigarette tube or wrapper e by mov-- ing the slide g farther to the left until the end of the slotf has been reached. At that time the position of the hook 1/ will be to the left of the projection u. If the slide g now be moved from the left to the right, the pin tu, which at the time when this movement begins is at the right extremity of the cylinder on, will push against the arm s, and consequently the cylinder m during its further movement will turn in a direction opposite to the one in which it was turned before, and the wire p will be screwed out of the cigarette. When'the hook a; reachesthe projection u, the wire p will be clear of the cigarette, and the hook :1; disengages the pin w by pushing away the arm s. The'cylinder Am will no longer turn, and the slide g and slidebar q will move together until the handle t' assumes the position shown in Fig. l. As soon as the wire is screwed out of the cigarette this one is removed from the spout d and falls into a suitable receptacle.
The slide g is provided with a spring z, that drags upon the slide-bar q and prevents an untimely displacement of the slide-bar.
Although I have shown and described the cigarette-filler mechanism as hav-ing a single spiral feeder, I do not limit myself to the employment of a single feeder, because I may use a series of feeders, as shown by Fig. 8 of the drawings. In this figure the spiral feeders p2 are shown as being formed by wires having convolutions of equal curve and disposed in crossing relation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a cigarette-machine, a filling mechanism comprising a spiral, and mechanism for positively actuating said spiral to impart rotary movement and axial displacement thereto; said mechanism being effective on the advancement of the filler to the work, to give both rotary movement and axial displacement to the spiral, and then to impart axial displacement only to said spiral, while on the return movement of the filler, thev mechanism screws the spiral out of the cigarette and thereafter displaces tite spiral in the direction only of its axis.
2. Acigarette-machinehavingfillingmeans comprising a wire in the form of a spiral, means for imparting movement to the said filling means, a body m, mounted turnably upon a movable slide g, to which body is fixed the screw-shaped wire p and which body is provided with a screw-shaped groove n of the same pitch as the wire, in combination with a pin r projecting into said groove and capable of being at suitable moments held firm as regards the movable slide or released therefrom in such a manner that a screwing and a straight motion is alternately imparted to the wire.
3. A cigarette machine having a filling mechanism comprising aspiral feeder, a slide provided with spaced hooks, a slide-bar having a pin, yieldable arms disposed in the path of said pin and having projections in the path of the spaced hooks, and means for actuating the slide.
4'. In a cigarette-machine, a filling mech-- anism comprising a spiral feeder, and an actuatin g mechanism to impart rotary and endwise movement to said spiral feeder, said actuating mechanism including a cam-grooved I'DO IIO
its convolutions corresponding in pitch to the groove of said revoluble member.
5. In a cigarette-machine, a filling mech anism comprisinga spiral feeder and an actuating mechanism therefor, said mechanism havinga revoluble and slidable member which carries the spiral feeder, means forimparting endwise movement to' the carrier member, and means for rotating the carrier member simultaneously with its slidable travel; said rotating means being effective only for a part of the travel of the carrier member.
6. In a cigarette-machine, a iilling mechanism comprising a spiral feeder and an actuating mechanism therefor', said mechanism including a movable base, a revoluble carrier member mounted on the base and having the feeder movable therewith, means for giving reciprocating movement to the base, and means for intermittently rotating the carrier member.
7.' A cigarette machine having a filling means, comprising a device in the form of a spiral, adapted to enter and carry the filler, and means for imparting a rotary motion to the said device.
8. A cigarette machine havingl a filling means, comprising a devicein the form of a spiral, adapted to enter and carry the filler, and means for imparting alternately a longitudinal and a rotary motion to the said device.
9. A cigarette-machine comprising a-base having an opening therein, a slide movable in the opening and carrying a device in the form of a spiral adapted to enter and carry the cigarette-filling, mechanism for imparting a revoluble and endwise movement to said spiral, a mold, means thereon for holding a cigarette tube or wrapper, and means for iinparting movement tothe slide to pass the lilling into the cigarette tube or Wrapper.
10. In a cigarette-machine, a filling mechanism comprising a revoluble and slidable carrier member,a filler spiral thereon, stop devices adjacent to the path of thejc'arrier` member, and a slidable element movable with the carrier member and having means arf ranged to coact withl thestopdevice's.
