Beit known that I, ANDREW JAMES JOHN- STON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelope and Blanks Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
Type-Writing on envelops for correspondence purposes, labels, and the like is more or less difficult and tedious Work, owing to it being necessary to feed each separately into the machine. My present invention is designed to avoid these defects.
Figures l and 2 show my invention as applied to an envelop.
In this case the envelop is made from a blank, such as that shown in Fig. 2, formed with flaps D and perforated. at E in parallel lines at intervals, and also provided with fillets of gum or other adhesive substance at the perforations E and at the ends F, as shown by the shade-lines. The blank is then folded at right angles to the perforationsalong the line G, the adhesive fillets causing the folded blank to adhere along the lines of fillets, and thus form a series'of envelops all connected together, as shown in Fig. 1. They can be typed on in the machine while in the strip and then afterward' separated by tearing themalong the perforated lines. Separate envelops are thus obtained of the usual shape.
It will readily be seen by reference to the drawings that the blank has flaps D arranged in a series upon one edge thereof, each corresponding to its respective envelop,.and the opposite edge of the blank is formed with a series ofcut-away portions corresponding in number and in line with the iiaps.- The strips of gum extending transversely of said blank are preferably arranged to extend from points on the edge of the blank midway between the flaps to points midway between said cutaway portions, the said gum strips being of a uniform width, whereby when the lower portion of the blank is folded upon the upperand secured directly thereto by said gum envelops of uniform rectangular shape will be produced.
I claim as my inventionm l. An improved article of manufacture,con sisting of a blank provided with a series of tabs at one edge, and a series of cut-away portions approximately semicircular in shape in the other edge in the same relative plane as the tab portions, strips of gum or otheradhesive substance extending transversely of said blank from points between said tabs on one edge to points in the same relative plane between the said cut-away portions of the opposite edge, said gum strips being of uniform wid th throughout their length, the/lower portion of said blank being designed to be folded upon and directly secured to the remainder thereof, by means of said gum strips, for forming a series of envelops each having a rectangular inclosing space, the said blank havingasingle line of perforations extending through the central longitudinal line of each of said strips of gum, whereby the envelops mayeasily be torn apart without interfering with the adhesion of the gum strips, thereby facilitating the passage of the envelops through a type-Writer in sheet or strip form before separation, substantially as described.
