(Application med .my 2a, 1901,) (No Model.)
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT ''EEICE JACOB R. WINTERS, von oLiNToN, MIssoURr.
BEcOlL-PAD FOR GUNS.
` sPEcIFIcArIoN forming part of Lears retentit@ 699,608, dated may 6,1902.,Y
Appleman and July 2%;1961.
To all whom it may concern.: B e it known that I, JACOB R. WINTERs, a
V citizen of the United States, residing at Clin.
ton, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have made certain-new and useful Im;- provements in Recoil-Pads for Guns, of which the following is a specification. My invention is an improvement in' recoil@a pads for guns, and has for an object to simplify such constructions, avoid any substantial lengthening of the stock, and provide a novell arrangement of the lling-,tnbe by which the pneumatic pad is lled,/as"well as to provide a cover for the padgand the invention` consists in certain novel construeL tions andcombinati'ons of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, lfiourelis a'rear epd view ofthe pad. Fig. 2 is a longitudinalectiou of my pad and cover therefor in place en a gunstock, the latter being partly broken away. Fig; 3 is a longitudinal section of the pad; and Fig. 4 is a side view showing the improvements in use on a gunstock, the latter being partly broken away. f In a patent granted to me August (l, 1895, No. 544,269, there is shown a recoil-pad in'- cluding an air-chamber forming the pad proper and a sleeve for embracing the gnustock; but, as well shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in i the said patent, the air-chamber operates to extend the length of the-stock substantially, and it becomes quite an object to provide a pad which will entirely serve the cushioning purpose and yet not extend the length oi? the stock to any considerable extent. By my present invention I so form the air-chamber as to provide the cushioning within the hollow ordinarily formed at the butt-end of a gun-stock, and in doing this I form the airchamberA with an outer wall A and an inner wall A2, such walls being united directly together at their outer edges, as shown at A3 in Figs. 1 and`2. By thus forming the air-chamber with its outer and inner walls united directly together I avoid any substantial projection at the edges of the butt-,end of the gun-stock and at the same time fur ish the cushioning eiect between'the said edges, as will be understood from Fig. 2.l The sleeve B extends from the united edges of the inner Serial No. 69,382.' (No model.)
ing the pad, and Ihave located the filling devices in such mannerv as to avoid any projection on the outer side of the padVthus protecting the filling devices from injury, 'as well as leaving the external surface of the'pad free from any'projections which might operate to injure the operator or injure a cover-pad when such a device is used, as shown'in Figs. 2 and 4. I therefore prefer to 'provide for filling purposes a lling-tube C, which connects with the inner wall A2 of the pad and may be made of such length as to extend adjacent to the open end of the sleeve B to facilitate filling the pad. When the pad has been lled, the tube C may be bent and secured at its end, as shown at C', andcan lie between the inner wall A' of the pad and the butt of the gunstock, as shown in Fig. 2. Byv this construction I avoid the necessity of valves, which are prone to leak, and arrange-the filling-tube in such manner that it maybe conveniently incased and will alord no projection or obstruction on the outer side of the recoil-pad when in use.`
It may be desirable in some instances toemploy the cover D, (shown in Figs. .2'and 4,) which (its over the pad and stock and may be secured by lacingalong the edge of the stock, as shown in Fi 4. This cover maybe made of kid or othe'soft leather or material and will not only protect the pad in use, but will prevent the samefpm any displacement 'when in use.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters- '1. The .recoil pad `herein described, comprisingthe air-chamber composed of innefand outer flexible walls united directly together at their outer edges, whereby the air-chamber roe' will form no substantial projection beyond Vthe @gid of the gun-siedi at the 11p-pes. an?.
