Be it known that I, OTTO 0. BRANNA, re-
siding at Erskine, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force- Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improved force-pump mechanism of a very simple and economical construction, capable of being easily manipulated, and which will effectively serve for its intended purposes.
In its generic nature my invention com prehends a double-acting plunger or piston, including a shifting cut-off or fluid-directing member adapted to cooperate with and be governed by the alternate movements of the plunger or piston.
My invention in its more complete form embodies a cylindrical chamber-,which forms a part of the lift-pipe, having adivision which serves to divide the fluid stream, and a pair of inlets working in harmony with each part of the divided cylinder, and a tubular cutoif slidable on the lift-pipe cylinder, said cutoff having a piston or plunger fixedly attached thereto and held for a limited reciprocal movement upon the said pipe-cylinder.
In its more subordinate features this invention consists in certain novel details of. construction and peculiar .combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularlypointed outin theappended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved force-pump, the plunger and cut-off portion being in position to lift the water up through the offtake-pipe when moved in the direction indicated by the arrow a. Fig. 2, is a similar view, the parts being shown in position for drawingthe waterinto the pumpcasing when the plunger or piston is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow 1). Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the pipecasing and the slidable cut-0E and the piston that codperates therewith in one position. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the said parts when adjusted to their other position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pipe-cylinder of the casing. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the cut-off carrying the piston or plunger disk.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 designates the tubular pumpcasing, having a pendent pipe-section l and at the upper end an externally-threaded portion l for receiving the threaded cap 2, through which the oiftake -'p.ipe section 3 slides and which discharges into a nozzled tube 4, joined to the cap 2, said lift-pipe 3 being joined with the hand-manipulated plunger-rod 5, as shown.'
At a suitable point the olftake-pipe connects with the cylindrical enlargement or casing 6, vertically divided bya central partition 6,which I term the water-divider, the upper end of which projects at right angles, as at 6, and closes off the upper end of the compartment 03 at one side, while the lower end of said partition (3 projects at right angles in the opposite direction, as at 6*, and forms the bottom closure member of a second compartment 'y, said divider forming, as it were, two vertical spaces 61 and e within the cylinder 6 of approximately half the diameter of the cylinder and terminating. one at the upper end and the other at the lower end in enlargements 6 6 having the full diameter of the cylinder 6. The upper one of said enlargements, which forms a part of the space (2, discharges into an offtake-pipe 3, While the lower enlargement, which forms a part of the space cl, communicates with the lift-pipe 7, the latter when the parts are assembled in an operative condition being held to slide in the pendent tubular extension 1 of the casing 1, while the lift-pipe 3 is guided in the nozzled tube 4, as before stated.
The cylinder-body 6 has two horizontallyarranged openings 8 8 at the bottom, the lower one, 8, of which communicates with the internal space or enlargement 6, and the one 8 opens into the space a, and it also has two similarly-disposed openings in the upper end designated by 9 9, the one, 9, of which opens into the space 6 and the other into the space or compartment d.
10 designates a tubular sleeve, which is mounted upon the cylinder 6 for a limited reat the lower end at a diametrically opposite point it has a second slot 10", the latter being held to cooperate with the opening 8 and the former with. the opening 9 in the cylinder 6 for reasons presently explained, and the said sleeve is also provided with a vertical slot 10, which cooperates with the stop 6 on the-cylinder, which limits the down movement of the sleeve, the up movement being limited by the flange G on the cylinder, as shown.
11 designates the piston-disk, which is centrally mounted upon and fixedly secured to the sleeve 10.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the complete construction and the advantages of my invention will readily appear.
Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 1 and the piston as being moved upward, the sleeve 10 during such movement will be so positioned that the lower opening 8 will become uncovered and the adjacent opening 8 closed. At the same time the lower opening 9 on the upper end of the sleeve will be closed and the other or upper opening 9 opened, and thereby permit a free forcing of the water into the upper part of the cylinder and out through the offtake-pipe, as clearly shown. (Indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1.) During the aforesaid operation the fluid is drawn up through the inlet-pipe and discharges into the lower end of the casing. At the beginning of the reverse movement of the piston-that is, when moved down-the sleeve 10, by reason of the frictional contact of the piston'with the outer casing, will be shifted upward on the cylinder, and thereby close the openings 8 and 9 and at the same time open the inlets 8 9, which permits a ready flow of the water through the space 6 from the lower part of the casing, as shown by the arrow 13 in Fig. 2. On the reverse or up movement of the piston the sleeve 10 will be shifted downward and cover the openings last referred to and uncover opening 8 of compartment 6 to permit water in lift-pipe to pass out of said opening into the lower end of casing and at same time uncover the opening9 to permit the water in casing above the piston to pass freely in the direction indicated by the arrow 16 in Fig. 1.
My pump construction is of a very strong and durable nature, and by reason of the peculiar combination of its several parts I am enabled to dispense with the drop and flap valves such as are common in pumps of this character and provide a substantially valveless pump, and by reason of the cut-off sleeve being joined to the piston-disk the operation of the pumpis rendered positive and uniform.
Changes in the details of construction hereinbefore described and shown may readily be made to adapt my invention for large pumps of great capacity without departing from'the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. In a pump as described, the combination with the casing, the lift and offtake pipe sections, and a cylindrical body connected with the two pipe-sections, said body having two independent vertical compartments,said compartments having fluid passages or openings, one at the upper and the other atthe lower end; of a cut-off slidably mounted on the cylindrical body, having a fluid-passage at the upper end, and a similar passage at the lower end, a piston-disk attached to and movable with the cut-off, said cut-off being movable in reverse directions by pressure on the disk in opposite directions, whereby to bring the openings in said sleeve into alternate cooperative position with the cylindrical-body openings, for the purposes described.
2. The combination with the casing 1, having a pendent pipe 1, and a lift-pipe at the top,and a nozzled extension detachablyjoincd to the upper end of the casing; of the lift and discharge pipes, a cylindrical bodyhavingits ends joined with the discharge and lift pipes, said body having a central vertical division, terminating at the ends in oppositely-extend-' ing horizontal sections, whereby to produce internal spaces d and e, a pair of water passages or openings 8 8 in the lower end, one of which opens into space (1, the other into space 6, said body having a second pair of water-spaces 9 9, opening, respectively, into the spaces e and d, a sleeve slidably mounted on the cylindrical body for a limited movement vertically thereon, a piston-disk fixedly mounted on the sleeve, said sleeve having an opening or passage at the top, and a similar opening at the bottom, said openings being adapted to alternately close and open the two sets of passages in the cylindrical body, for the purposes specified.
3. The combination with the pump-casing; of the inlet and outlet pipe sections, the cylindrical body 6, connected therewith, said body having two independent compartments d and 6, one of which d has direct communication with the lift-pipe section, and the other c has direct communication with the outlet-pipe section, said cylinder-body having openings or fluid-passages 9 9 opening, respectively, into the upper end of the compartments d and e, and like passages 8 8 opening respectively into the compartments d and e; of the sleeve 10, shiftably held on the body 6, and having openings 10 10 at the upper and lower ends for operating in harmony with the openings 9 9 and 8 8", a piston-disk fixedly held on the sleeve, and means on the body for limiting the shifting movement of the sleeve, as set forth.
