ALBERT BOND, OF NATICK, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN WV. CURRIER, OF NORTH TROY, VERMONT.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,443, dated May 6, 1902. Application filed March 1, 1901. Serial No. 49,439. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BOND, a citizen of the United States, residing` in Natick, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspeciication, likeletters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to wrenches of that class known as monkey-wrenches, and has for its object to provide a simple, efiicient, and inexpensive wrench of the class referred to and one in which the usual threaded rod and adj usting-nut are dispensed with. In accordance with this invention the shank to which the fixed jaw is attached has. mounted on it a movable jaw provided with a beveled or tapering lug or proj ection, which is adapted to be engaged by a sliding collar or yoke to lock the movable jaw in its adjusted position. These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure l is a side-elevation of a wrench embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the wrench shown in Fig. l looking toward the right, and Fig. 3 a side elevation with the movable jaw disengaged from its locking collar or yoke.
Referring to the drawings, ct represents the iix'ed jaw; b, the shank provided with the removable handle c; d, the movable jaw which slides on the shank b, and e the locking collar or'yoke for the movable jaw.
The movable jaw is made separate from the locking collar or yoke, but is adapted to be secured in its adjusted position by means of a beveled or tapering lug or projection f, extended from the bottom of said jaw, which is adapted to enter the upper portion of the yoke or collar between it and one side of the shank l1, thereby Vrocking the said collar until the shank is engaged by the upper edge of the lback portion or bar of the collar and by the lower edge of the front portion or bar of said collar. In practice the jaw d is moved toward the xed jaw a until the nut to be turned is engaged by both jaws, and when in this position the looking-collar is moved along the shank b and forced into engagement with the beveled lug or projection, thus locking the movable jaw in its adjusted position.
The parts of the Wrench are plain and can be made and assembed at amininum expense. So, also, a finer adjustment may be obtained, as the movable jaw can be brought into close Contact with the nut and held there while the locking-collar is engaged therewith.
I claim- 1.- In a wrench of the class described, the combination with a fixed jaw and a shank to which it is secured, of a movable jaw mounted to slide on said shank intermediate the ixed jaw and the end'of said shank, and a locking collar or yoke mounted on said shank to move bodily thereon and adapted to engage said movable jaw, substantially as described.
2. In a wrench of the class described, the combination with a lixed jaw a shank to which it is secured and a handle secured to said shank, of a movable jaw mounted to slide on said shank intermediate said fixed jaw and said handle, abeveled lu g projecting from the' under side of said movable jaw, and a locking-collar adapted to engage said lug to lock the movable jaw in its adj usted position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT Bono.
