EMBOSSlNG-MACHINE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,149, dated May 6, 1902.
Application filed August 5, 1901. serial 7 (N mod-6L) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC CLAPPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Osnaburg, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Embossing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for embossing or imprinting ornamental designs on hollow building blocks or tiles during the process of forming the same; and the object is to provide a machine for this purpose of simple construction and in which the embossing-cylinder may be readily adjusted for a desired depth of impression.
I will describe an embossing machine embodying my invention and then'point'out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all'the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of an embossi ng-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig.3 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4. is a side elevation showing a modified form of embossingcylinder.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the mold -casing, Within which is arranged the usual core 2, this core 2 at the inlet end of the mold being attached to abar 3,connected to the rear end of the mold. The upper wall of the mold-casing is cut away,- as indicated at 4:, so that the embossing-cylinder may have its lower surface projected below the plane of,
the inner wall of the mold to engage against the clay forced through the mold.
Extended forward from opposite. sides of the casing 1 at the top are brackets 5, between which the embossing-cylinder 6 rotates. The exterior of this cylinder 6 may have any desired pattern thereon, and it is held against I the building block by means of rollers 7, which engage against the inner surface of the cylinder. These rollers are mounted torotate on studs 8, which are adjustable vertically in slots 9, formed in the brackets 5, and are heldjas adjusted by means of thumbnuts 10. By making the rollers 7 adjustable the embossing-cylinder; may be caused to press more or less into the material, as desired.
In Fig. 4 I have shown the emb0ssing-cyl Jinder as consisting of two segmental sections 11 and 12, at the ends of which are inwardlyextended arms 13, mounted to rotate on a shaft 14:,which is designed to have its bearings in standards 15 on the brackets 5. This shaft or rod 14 may be held at one end to engage against the outer side of one of the up- .rights 15, and at the other end it may be proit is obvious that embossing-cylinders may be arranged at the sides, or, in fact, embossing= cylinders may be employed for operating on the several sides of the block.
An embossing device embodying myinven tion may be readily applied to block-forming machines of the ordinary construction, and as the cylinder is quite large it will require but very little power to operate it.
The object in making a cylinder in two parts, as shown in Fig. 4:, is to provide for embossing blocks that have plain end margins, and each section will be of a length to print the block.
To reduce friction to a minimum, I provide the adjustable bearing-rollers 17.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a building-block-embossing machine, a die comprising a casing and a core, brackets extended forward from the casing,roll ers supported by the brackets, and an embossingcylinder engaging with its inner surface against said rollers, substantially as specified.
. 2. In a building-block-embossing machine, a die comprising a casing and acore,brackets extended forward from the casing at opposite sides, rollers adjustable vertically in said brackets, and an embossing-cylinder having too 10 on the inner surface of the embossing-cylinder, as set forth.
4. In a building-block-embossing machine, brackets for supporting an embossing-cylinder said brackets being adapted to be secured to the machine and each provided with an in- 1 5 clined slot at each end, a vertical slot at its middle, and a standard also at its middle, as and for the purpose set forth.
