SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,546, dated April 29, 1902. Applicationfiled September 20, 1901. Serial No. 75,908. (No model.)

To to whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ROBERT E. OvERLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summit Station, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grain-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of harvesting-machine carriers; and the objects of my invention are to provide graincarriers of a harvesting or similar machine with simple and reliable means for preventing the grain becoming choked between the horizontal and inclined carrier-fram es and to otherwise facilitate the carrying of the grain to the proper point of discharge onto the deck or discharge-board. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of an ordinary graincarrier, the means for operating the same being removed for the sake of clearness in illustration. Fig. 2 isa transverse section on line a; a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 isa longitudinal section on line y y of Fig. 1.

1 represents the sideframe-bars of the horizontal portion of the carrier-frame, and 2 the end frame-bar thereof.

3 represents the inclined or elevating oar rier-frame, which rises from the inner end of the horizontal frame at the usual or desired angle.

4 represents the endless carrier belt or apron which runs horizontally over rollers 5, which are journaled between the side frame-bars l of the horizontal frame, this belt or apron carrying thereon at intervals the desired number of transverse carrier-slats 6. Between the side frame-bars of the inclined frame 3 are arranged the usual upper and lower inclined carrier belts or aprons 7 and 8, these belts running over upper and lower rollers or shafts 9 and 10 and carrying the usual transverse carrier-slatsll. From the upper portion and under side of the frame 3 extends outward and downward an inclined deck or dischargeboard 12. S uitably secured to the upper side of the rear frame-bar 2 of the horizontal carrierframe is the outer or rear end portion of a metallic guard-strip 13, the latter extending, as

shown in the drawings, from said rear framebar2 toapoint between the horizontal and inclined carrier-frames, where through the medium of a suitable hinge 14 it is jointedly connected with a second strip or guard-section 13, the latter extending, as shown, between the upper side of the belt or apron 8 and the under side of the belt or apron 7. In its outer end portion the strip 13 curves over the lower and outer roller 10, thence extends downward to meet the deck 12, this downwardly-extending portion of said strip being bent substantially in the line of a compound curve, as indicated at 13". That portion of the strip 13 which passes over said roller 10 is curved about the latter in close proximity to its periphery. As indicated in the drawings, the line upon which the jointed strips 13 and 13" are laid is drawn parallel with and near the receivingsides of the horizontal and inclined frames. I also cause to extend between the belts or aprons 7 and 8, near the opposite side of the carrier-frame, a metallic guardstrip 15, which, as prescribed for the strip 13, hasits outer portion 15 running over the outer lower roll 10 and having its curved termination in contact with the deck. The strip 15 has its rear portion passing, as shown in Fig. 2, below the belt or apron 4,'the end of said strip 15 being rigidly secured to the bottom or floor 1 of the horizontal frame.

In the use of carriers of the character herein described,where the grain flowing from the cutter-bar or knives onto the horizontal belt 4 is carried to the forward end of the horizontal frame, and thence between the belts 7 and 8, difficulty has been experienced through the tendency of the grain to become clogged or choked in the opening between the horizontal andinclined belts. It willbe observed that by the use of the guard-strips herein described a support for the grain is formed between said horizontal and inclined carrierbelts, which will serve to guard against the depression and choking of the grain between the carriers at the point heretofore men'- tioned and which will assist in guiding the grain from the horizontal to the inclined carrier section. Difficulty has also been experienced through the tendency of a certain portion of the grain as it passes over the outer lower roller 10 to enter the opening or spaces between the inner end of the deck or discharge-board 12 and the inclinedlcarrierframe. In order to insure the deposit of the grain on the deck or discharge-board at a deck 12.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a grain-carrier, the combination with a horizontal carrier-frame, a horizontal endless carrier-belt mounted upon rollers in said horizontal frame and having transverse carrierslats, an inclined carrier-frame section extending from said horizontal frame, upper and lower endless belts mounted on rollers therein and carrying transverse carrier-slats, of a guard-strip having one end fixed to the horizontal frame, said strip extending as described over the carrier-slats of the horizontal carrier-aprons and between the parallel aprons of the inclined frame, the outer end of said strip being curved over and in close proximity to the lower outer belt-carrying roller of said inclined frame, substantially as specified.
