DAM PER FOR FIREPLAC'ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 697,893, dated. April 1 5, 1902.
Application filed May 3, 1901. Serial No. 58,613. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton,
in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dampers for Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dampers for fireplaces; and its objectis to improve the construction of these devices in a manner which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 a frontelevation of a portion of a. fireplace broken away in part to show the location of the damper, and in Fig. 2 I have shown in transverse section the damper in place,.and at Fig. 3 a view of a portion thereof in longitudinal section upon the line 3 3 of Fig.- 2.
The object of the improvement is to produce a damper which while set within the brick or other setting of the fireplace and in a position to open and close the smoke-flue may be conveniently operated from the outside. For this reason I provide the damper pr0per,A,with an arm or projection B,attached to the damper-shaft a, the end of which is adapted to engage with a worm O, mounted upon an operating-shaft D, which extends outwardly through and beyond the fireplacesetting and is provided at its outer end with an operating-knob E. It will be obvious that by turning this knob in one direction or the other the worm will be turned, thereby imparting motion through the projection B to the damper-shaft to open or close the same, as the case may be.
The damper is journaled in the ends of a casing G, located in the flue and having a flange 9, upon which is mounted a hood or casing F, into which the end of the dampershaft a, carrying the arm B, extends and in which is journaled the worm-operating shaft D, as shown in Fig. 3.
I claim- In a damper, thev combination with a casing having a. flange, of a damper pivoted in said casing and having a shaft projecting therefrom above the flange, an arm on said shaft, a hood secured to said flange and ex= tending over the damper-shaft and arm, an operating-shaft journaled in said hood, and a worm on said operating-shaft within the hood and in engagement with said arm, said operating-shaft having a suitable handle at its outer end.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 27 th day of April, 1901.
SAMUEL SHAW.
